Soft Homemade Skillet Flatbread (Pita Style)

There’s something deeply satisfying about making your own flatbread from scratch—especially when it puffs beautifully in a hot skillet and turns soft, warm, and pillowy. This homemade skillet flatbread, inspired by classic pita, requires simple ingredients, no oven, and delivers bakery-quality results right from your stovetop.

Whether you use it for wraps, dipping, or sandwiches, this recipe is reliable, beginner-friendly, and incredibly rewarding.

🌾 What Makes This Flatbread Special?

Unlike traditional oven-baked pita, this version is cooked in a skillet, making it accessible anywhere. It develops a soft interior and slightly chewy texture, with light golden spots on the outside. When done right, it can even form a pocket—perfect for stuffing.

🧾 Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ¾ to 1 cup warm water

🥣 Step 1: Prepare the Dough

In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast. Mix everything well so the yeast is evenly distributed.

Add the olive oil, then gradually pour in warm water while mixing. Start with ¾ cup and add more as needed until the dough comes together into a soft, slightly sticky ball.

✋ Step 2: Knead Until Smooth

Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for about 8–10 minutes until it becomes smooth, elastic, and soft.

If the dough feels too sticky, add a small amount of flour. If it’s too dry, wet your hands slightly and continue kneading.

⏳ Step 3: Let It Rise

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl and cover it with a clean towel or plastic wrap.

Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
