Creamed Peas on Toast is a simple, nostalgic recipe that turns basic pantry ingredients into a warm, creamy, and satisfying meal. It’s often considered comfort food because it’s quick to make, budget-friendly, and surprisingly rich in flavor despite its simplicity. Traditionally served over crispy toast, it works well for breakfast, lunch, or a light dinner.
Below is a clear, step-by-step guide to making it from scratch.
Creamed Peas on Toast – Step-by-Step Recipe
Ingredients (serves 2–3)
- 2 cups green peas (fresh or frozen)
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups milk (warm or room temperature)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- A pinch of garlic powder (optional)
- A pinch of nutmeg (optional but classic in cream sauces)
- 4 slices of bread (white, sourdough, or your choice)
- Optional garnish: chopped parsley or grated cheese
Step 1: Prepare the Peas
If using frozen peas, rinse them under warm water or let them thaw for a few minutes.
If using fresh peas, boil them in lightly salted water for 2–3 minutes until tender, then drain.
Set the peas aside. They should be soft but still bright green.
Step 2: Make the Cream Sauce (Roux Base)
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
Once melted, add the flour and whisk continuously for about 1–2 minutes.
This mixture is called a roux and it helps thicken the sauce. It should look smooth and slightly golden, not browned.
Step 3: Add the Milk Slowly
Gradually pour in the milk while whisking constantly.
This step is important to avoid lumps.
Keep stirring until the mixture becomes smooth and starts to thicken (about 3–5 minutes). It should have a creamy, gravy-like consistency.
