Old-Fashioned Baked Egg Custard Recipe
Ingredients
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- Ground nutmeg, for topping
- Butter, for greasing the baking dishes
Equipment
- Mixing bowl
- Whisk
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Fine-mesh strainer (optional, for extra smooth custard)
- Four to six ramekins or a 9-inch baking dish
- Large roasting pan
- Kettle or pot of hot water
Step 1: Prepare the Oven and Baking Dishes
Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C).
Lightly butter the ramekins or baking dish to prevent sticking and make serving easier. Arrange the ramekins inside a large roasting pan that will later be filled with hot water.
Step 2: Warm the Milk
Pour the milk into a saucepan and heat it over medium-low heat until it is warm but not boiling. Warming the milk helps it blend more smoothly with the eggs, creating a creamy custard.
Remove the milk from the heat and allow it to cool slightly for a minute or two.
