Cheesy Ground Beef and Potato Bake: The Ultimate Comfort Food

When it comes to satisfying family dinners, few dishes can compete with a hearty Cheesy Ground Beef and Potato Bake. This classic casserole combines layers of tender potatoes, flavorful seasoned ground beef, creamy sauce, and melted cheese into one irresistible meal. It’s simple enough for busy weeknights yet comforting enough to serve for Sunday dinner or gatherings with friends.

One of the greatest advantages of this recipe is its versatility. You can customize the seasonings, add vegetables, or experiment with different cheeses while still enjoying the same rich, homemade flavor. Plus, everything bakes together in one dish, making cleanup quick and easy.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound (450 g) ground beef
  • 5–6 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese (optional for extra stretch)
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom or cream of chicken soup
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.

Wash, peel, and slice the potatoes into thin, even rounds. Thin slices ensure the potatoes cook evenly and become perfectly tender during baking.

Dice the onion and mince the garlic so they are ready for cooking.

Step 2: Cook the Ground Beef

Heat a large skillet over medium heat.

Add the ground beef and cook until it begins to brown, breaking it into small crumbles with a wooden spoon.

Once partially cooked, add the diced onion and continue cooking until the onion becomes soft and translucent.

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

Drain any excess grease before seasoning the mixture with salt, pepper, paprika, and Italian seasoning. Stir well to evenly distribute the flavors.

Step 3: Prepare the Creamy Sauce

In a medium bowl, whisk together the condensed soup and milk until smooth and creamy.

This mixture creates a rich sauce that keeps the casserole moist while baking and blends beautifully with the cheese.
