Candied Bacon Crackers: A Sweet, Salty, Crispy Appetizer Everyone Will Love
Candied Bacon Crackers are one of those simple snacks that look impressive but require very little effort. They combine crispy crackers, smoky bacon, brown sugar, and a little spice to create a bite-sized appetizer that is sweet, salty, crunchy, and slightly caramelized. They are perfect for parties, holiday trays, game nights, family gatherings, or anytime you want a quick snack that disappears fast.
The best part is that you do not need complicated ingredients. With only a few pantry items, you can make a tray of golden, glossy crackers topped with crisp bacon and a sticky candy-like coating.
What Are Candied Bacon Crackers?
Candied Bacon Crackers are small crackers topped with pieces of bacon and brown sugar, then baked until the bacon becomes crisp and the sugar melts into a caramel-like glaze. As they bake, the bacon fat soaks slightly into the cracker, giving it a rich savory flavor, while the sugar forms a sweet coating on top.
The result is a perfect balance of flavors: salty bacon, buttery crackers, and sweet caramelized sugar. Some people also add black pepper, cayenne pepper, maple syrup, or chili flakes for extra depth.
Ingredients You Will Need
To make Candied Bacon Crackers, you will need:
- 1 sleeve of butter crackers or club crackers
- 8 to 10 slices of bacon
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup, optional
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional
- A pinch of salt, optional
Butter crackers work very well because they are sturdy and have a rich flavor. Club crackers are also a popular choice because their rectangular shape makes them easy to top with bacon.
Step 1: Prepare the Baking Tray
Start by preheating your oven to 350°F / 175°C.
Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper. This step is important because the sugar and bacon fat can become sticky while baking. For easier cleanup, foil is usually the best option.
Place a wire rack on top of the baking sheet if you have one. The rack allows the heat to circulate around the crackers and helps the bacon cook more evenly. If you do not have a rack, you can place the crackers directly on the lined baking sheet.
Step 2: Arrange the Crackers
Place the crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking tray. Leave a little space between each cracker so the heat can move around them.
Do not overlap the crackers. If they overlap, they may not bake evenly, and the sugar may stick them together too much.
Step 3: Cut the Bacon
Take your bacon slices and cut them into small pieces that fit on top of each cracker.
For rectangular crackers, cut each bacon slice into thirds or quarters. For round crackers, smaller pieces work better.
Try not to use bacon pieces that are too large. Bacon shrinks while baking, but if the piece is too thick or too big, it may not crisp properly before the cracker becomes too dark.
Step 4: Add the Bacon to the Crackers
Place one piece of bacon on top of each cracker.
Make sure the bacon sits flat. This helps it cook evenly and allows the sugar to melt smoothly over it.
For a richer bite, you can slightly fold the bacon piece, but keep in mind that folded bacon may take longer to crisp.
