Beef ‘n’ Biscuit Casserole: A Hearty Step-by-Step Comfort Food Recipe

Beef ‘n’ Biscuit Casserole is a warm, satisfying dinner made with seasoned ground beef, a rich tomato-based sauce, vegetables, melted cheese, and soft golden biscuits baked on top. It is the kind of meal that feels homemade, filling, and comforting without requiring complicated ingredients or advanced cooking skills.

This casserole is perfect for busy weeknights, family dinners, potlucks, or cold evenings when you want something hearty and easy. The beef mixture becomes savory and saucy underneath, while the biscuits bake into a fluffy, golden topping that soaks up just enough flavor from the filling.

What Is Beef ‘n’ Biscuit Casserole?

Beef ‘n’ Biscuit Casserole is a baked dish that combines a ground beef filling with biscuit dough. The beef layer is usually cooked first with onions, garlic, tomatoes, seasonings, and sometimes vegetables. Then biscuit dough is placed over the top and baked until the biscuits are browned and cooked through.

The result is similar to a savory pot pie, but instead of a pie crust, it uses biscuits. The top is soft and golden, the bottom is rich and saucy, and every serving has a mix of meat, cheese, vegetables, and bread.

Ingredients

For the Beef Filling

  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil, only if needed
  • 1 can tomato sauce, about 15 oz
  • 1 can diced tomatoes, drained
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder, optional
  • 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables, corn, peas, or bell peppers
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

For the Biscuit Topping

  • 1 can refrigerated biscuit dough, or homemade biscuit dough
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley, optional
  • ¼ cup shredded cheddar cheese, optional for topping

Step 1: Prepare the Baking Dish

Preheat the oven to 375°F / 190°C.

Grease a medium baking dish with butter or non-stick spray. A 9×13 inch dish works well if you want a thinner casserole, while a smaller deep dish gives a thicker, heartier result.

Set the dish aside while you prepare the beef filling.

Step 2: Cook the Ground Beef

Place a large skillet over medium-high heat.

Add the ground beef and break it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook until the beef is browned and no pink remains.

If the beef releases too much grease, drain the excess fat. Leaving too much grease can make the casserole heavy and oily.

If your beef is very lean, add a tablespoon of olive oil to keep the filling moist.

Step 3: Add Onion and Garlic

Add the chopped onion to the skillet with the cooked beef.

Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring often, until the onion becomes soft and slightly golden.

Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds. Garlic burns quickly, so stir continuously and do not let it darken.

This step builds the main flavor of the casserole. The onion adds sweetness, while garlic gives the beef a deeper savory taste.

Step 4: Season the Beef

Add salt, black pepper, paprika, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, and chili powder if using.

Stir well so the seasoning coats the beef evenly.

The seasoning should be balanced: savory, slightly smoky, and flavorful without being too spicy. You can adjust the spices depending on your taste.
