Beef ‘n’ Biscuit Casserole: A Hearty Step-by-Step Comfort Food Recipe
Beef ‘n’ Biscuit Casserole is a warm, filling, family-style dish made with seasoned ground beef, a rich savory sauce, vegetables, melted cheese, and soft golden biscuits baked on top. It is the kind of recipe that feels homemade, comforting, and satisfying without being difficult to prepare.
This casserole is perfect for busy weeknights, potluck dinners, cold evenings, or anytime you want a complete meal in one baking dish. The beef mixture is rich and flavorful, while the biscuits bake into a fluffy, golden topping that soaks up just enough sauce to become tender underneath and lightly crisp on top.
What Makes Beef ‘n’ Biscuit Casserole Special?
The best part of this casserole is the contrast between the saucy beef filling and the biscuit topping. The bottom layer is hearty, savory, and slightly creamy or tomato-based depending on how you make it. The top layer is made with biscuit dough, which bakes into soft, buttery pieces that make the dish feel like a cross between a pot pie and a baked beef dinner.
It is also very flexible. You can make it with canned biscuits, homemade biscuit dough, cheddar biscuits, or even drop biscuit batter. You can keep the filling simple with beef and sauce, or add vegetables, beans, corn, mushrooms, peppers, or cheese.
Ingredients
For the Beef Filling
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon oil or butter
- 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning or dried parsley
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- ½ cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 cup corn, peas, or mixed vegetables
- ½ cup sour cream or cream cheese, optional for a creamier filling
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
For the Biscuit Topping
- 1 can refrigerated biscuits, or 8 homemade biscuit rounds
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon chopped parsley
- ¼ cup shredded cheddar cheese, optional
Step 1: Prepare the Baking Dish
Preheat your oven to 375°F / 190°C.
Lightly grease a medium baking dish with butter or cooking spray. A 9×13 inch baking dish works well if you want a thinner casserole, while a smaller dish will make the filling deeper and the biscuit topping thicker.
Set the dish aside while you prepare the beef mixture.
Step 2: Cook the Onion and Garlic
Place a large skillet over medium heat. Add the oil or butter.
Once hot, add the chopped onion and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until soft and lightly golden.
Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds. Stir constantly so the garlic does not burn.
This step builds the flavor base of the casserole. Onion adds sweetness, while garlic gives the dish a warm savory taste.
Step 3: Brown the Ground Beef
Add the ground beef to the skillet.
Break it apart with a spoon or spatula and cook until it is fully browned. This usually takes 6 to 8 minutes.
Once the beef is cooked, drain excess grease if needed. Leaving too much grease can make the casserole heavy and oily.
The beef should be browned but still moist.
