Chocolate Covered Ritz Crackers: A Sweet, Salty, Crunchy Treat Made Step by Step
Chocolate Covered Ritz Crackers are one of the easiest no-bake treats you can make, yet they taste surprisingly rich and addictive. They combine buttery, salty crackers with smooth melted chocolate, creating the perfect balance of sweet and savory. The texture is also what makes them special: crisp crackers inside, creamy chocolate outside, and optional fillings or toppings that make each bite even better.
This recipe is perfect for holidays, parties, gift boxes, dessert trays, school snacks, or quick homemade sweets. You do not need an oven, complicated tools, or advanced baking skills. With a few simple ingredients and a little chilling time, you can make a beautiful batch of chocolate-covered cracker cookies at home.
What Are Chocolate Covered Ritz Crackers?
Chocolate Covered Ritz Crackers are buttery round crackers dipped in melted chocolate. They can be made plain with one cracker, or sandwiched with a filling such as peanut butter, caramel, marshmallow cream, Nutella, or cookie butter.
The most popular version is made by spreading peanut butter between two Ritz crackers, then dipping the sandwich in chocolate. The result tastes similar to a homemade candy bar: salty, creamy, crunchy, and chocolatey.
Ingredients
Basic Version
- 40 Ritz crackers
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips or milk chocolate chips
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil or vegetable shortening, optional
- Sea salt, sprinkles, crushed nuts, or crushed cookies for topping, optional
Peanut Butter Sandwich Version
- 80 Ritz crackers
- 1 cup creamy peanut butter
- 2 cups chocolate chips or chocolate melting wafers
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil or shortening, optional
- Sprinkles, chopped peanuts, or sea salt for garnish
Step 1: Prepare Your Work Area
Before melting the chocolate, prepare a baking sheet. Line it with parchment paper or wax paper. This prevents the dipped crackers from sticking after the chocolate hardens.
Make sure your crackers, filling, toppings, and utensils are ready. Chocolate can begin to thicken as it cools, so it is easier to work smoothly when everything is prepared first.
You will also need a fork, spoon, or dipping tool to coat the crackers.
Step 2: Choose the Style You Want
There are two main ways to make Chocolate Covered Ritz Crackers.
For a simple version, dip each single cracker directly into melted chocolate.
For a richer version, make cracker sandwiches first. Spread peanut butter or another filling between two crackers, then dip the whole sandwich in chocolate.
The sandwich version is thicker, more filling, and has more flavor. The single-cracker version is lighter and quicker.
Step 3: Make the Cracker Sandwiches
Place half of the crackers flat-side up on the lined baking sheet.
Spread about one teaspoon of peanut butter on each cracker. Do not add too much filling, because it can squeeze out when dipping.
Place another cracker on top and press gently to form a sandwich.
Repeat until all the cracker sandwiches are assembled.
If the peanut butter is very soft, place the tray in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes. This helps the sandwiches firm up and makes dipping easier.
