Death by Chocolate Bundt Cake is a dramatic name for a cake that truly deserves it. This dessert is rich, moist, dark, and loaded with chocolate in every layer. It has a soft chocolate cake base, melted chocolate chips inside, and a glossy chocolate ganache poured over the top. Each slice is dense, tender, and deeply flavorful, making it perfect for birthdays, holidays, dinner parties, or any moment when only an intense chocolate dessert will do.
The beauty of a Bundt cake is that it looks elegant without requiring complicated decorating. The pan creates a beautiful shape, while the ganache flows naturally over the ridges. With the right method, this cake turns out moist, shiny, and impressive every time.
Ingredients
For the Chocolate Bundt Cake
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 large eggs
- 1 cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt
- ¾ cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot coffee or hot water
- 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
For the Chocolate Ganache
- 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
- ¾ cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Step 1: Prepare the Bundt Pan
Preheat your oven to 350°F / 175°C.
Grease a 10- or 12-cup Bundt pan very well. This step is extremely important because Bundt cakes can stick if the pan is not properly prepared.
Use softened butter or baking spray, making sure to coat every curve and ridge of the pan. After greasing, dust the inside lightly with cocoa powder instead of flour. Cocoa powder prevents white marks from appearing on the finished chocolate cake.
Tap out any excess cocoa powder and set the pan aside.
Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Whisk everything together until the mixture looks even and smooth.
Mixing the dry ingredients first helps distribute the baking powder and baking soda evenly, which gives the cake a better rise and texture.
Step 3: Combine the Wet Ingredients
In another bowl, add the eggs, sour cream, vegetable oil, buttermilk, and vanilla extract.
Whisk until the mixture becomes smooth and creamy.
The sour cream keeps the cake moist, the oil gives it a soft texture, and the buttermilk adds richness while helping the cake stay tender.
Step 4: Make the Cake Batter
Pour the wet mixture into the bowl of dry ingredients.
Mix gently using a whisk or spatula until the batter begins to come together. Do not overmix, because too much mixing can make the cake heavy or tough.
At this stage, the batter will be thick.
Step 5: Add Hot Coffee or Hot Water
Slowly pour in the hot coffee or hot water while stirring.
The batter will become thinner and smoother. This is normal.
Hot coffee deepens the chocolate flavor without making the cake taste strongly like coffee. If you do not want to use coffee, hot water also works well.
Mix until the batter is glossy and fully combined.
Step 6: Fold in the Chocolate Chips
Add the chocolate chips to the batter.
Fold them in gently with a spatula.
The chocolate chips melt slightly during baking and create rich pockets of chocolate throughout the cake. This is one of the reasons the cake earns the name “Death by Chocolate.”
Step 7: Fill the Bundt Pan
Pour the batter into the prepared Bundt pan.
Use a spatula to spread it evenly. Tap the pan gently on the counter a few times to remove large air bubbles.
Do not fill the pan all the way to the top. Leave some space because the cake will rise as it bakes.
