Hawaiian Pineapple Fluff: A Light, Creamy Tropical Dessert Salad

Hawaiian Pineapple Fluff is a sweet, creamy, no-bake dessert made with crushed pineapple, whipped topping, pudding mix, marshmallows, coconut, and fruit. It is soft, fluffy, refreshing, and full of tropical flavor. This dessert is often served at potlucks, family gatherings, summer parties, holidays, or backyard cookouts because it is easy to prepare and can be made ahead of time.

The word “fluff” describes the texture perfectly. It is not a heavy cake or baked pudding. Instead, it is a chilled dessert salad with a creamy base and soft pieces of fruit mixed throughout. The pineapple gives it brightness, the whipped topping makes it airy, the marshmallows add sweetness, and the coconut gives it a classic island-style flavor.

Why This Dessert Is Special

Hawaiian Pineapple Fluff is loved because it is simple but feels festive. You do not need an oven, complicated steps, or expensive ingredients. Everything is mixed in one bowl and chilled until the flavors blend together.

It is also very flexible. You can make it with pineapple only, or you can add mandarin oranges, cherries, bananas, pecans, macadamia nuts, or shredded coconut. The result is a creamy tropical dessert that tastes light, fruity, and nostalgic.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 can crushed pineapple, 20 oz, with juice
  • 1 package instant vanilla pudding mix, 3.4 oz
  • 1 container whipped topping, 8 oz, thawed
  • 2 cups mini marshmallows
  • 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 cup mandarin orange slices, drained
  • ½ cup maraschino cherries, drained and halved
  • ½ cup chopped pecans or macadamia nuts, optional

Optional Add-Ins

  • 1 sliced banana
  • ½ cup diced mango
  • ½ cup diced strawberries
  • ½ cup cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup sour cream or Greek yogurt for a tangier flavor
  • Extra coconut for garnish

Step 1: Prepare the Fruit

Start by draining the mandarin oranges and maraschino cherries well. Too much liquid can make the fluff watery.

Do not drain the crushed pineapple if you are using instant pudding mix. The pineapple juice helps dissolve the pudding powder and creates a thick, creamy base.

If you are adding fresh fruit such as bananas, strawberries, or mango, cut them into small bite-sized pieces. Keep the pieces small so every spoonful has a good mix of fruit and cream.

Step 2: Mix the Pineapple and Pudding

In a large mixing bowl, add the crushed pineapple with its juice.

Sprinkle the instant vanilla pudding mix over the pineapple.

Stir well until the pudding powder is fully mixed with the pineapple juice. The mixture will begin to thicken after a minute or two.

This step is important because the pudding mix gives the dessert body. It keeps the fluff creamy instead of runny and helps the fruit hold together.

Step 3: Add the Whipped Topping

Add the thawed whipped topping to the pineapple-pudding mixture.

Fold it in gently using a spatula. Do not stir too aggressively, because you want to keep the mixture light and airy.

The color should become pale, creamy, and smooth. This is the base of the Hawaiian Pineapple Fluff.
