This pasta salad is loved because it is simple to make, easy to customize, and tastes even better after chilling. The pasta absorbs the dressing, the vegetables add crunch, and the cheese gives a creamy, salty balance. Every bite is colorful, tangy, and full of Mediterranean-style flavor.

Why This Pasta Salad Works So Well

The secret to a good Italian Dressing Pasta Salad is balance. The pasta should be cooked just right, the vegetables should stay crisp, and the dressing should coat everything without making the salad soggy.

Italian dressing brings acidity, herbs, garlic, and oil all in one. It gives the salad a bold flavor without needing a complicated homemade sauce. You can use bottled Italian dressing for convenience or make your own for a fresher taste.

Ingredients

For the Pasta Salad

  • 1 pound rotini, penne, bow tie, or fusilli pasta
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1 cucumber, diced
  • 1 cup bell peppers, diced
  • ½ red onion, thinly sliced
  • ½ cup black olives, sliced
  • 1 cup mozzarella pearls or cubed mozzarella
  • ½ cup parmesan cheese, grated or shaved
  • ½ cup pepperoni slices or salami, optional
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • ¼ cup fresh basil, chopped, optional

For the Italian Dressing

  • ¾ cup Italian dressing
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, optional
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar or lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional

Step 1: Choose the Right Pasta

Short pasta shapes work best for pasta salad. Rotini, fusilli, penne, and bow tie pasta are great choices because they hold dressing well.

Avoid long pasta like spaghetti or linguine because it does not mix as evenly with the vegetables and dressing.

Step 2: Cook the Pasta

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add a generous amount of salt to the water. This is important because it seasons the pasta from the inside.

Add the pasta and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. The pasta should be tender but still slightly firm.

Do not overcook the pasta. Soft pasta can break apart and become mushy after mixing with dressing.

Step 3: Cool the Pasta

Drain the pasta and rinse it briefly under cold water.

This stops the cooking process and cools the pasta quickly. It also removes extra starch so the pasta does not stick together.

Shake off as much water as possible, then transfer the pasta to a large mixing bowl.

Let it sit for a few minutes to dry slightly before adding the dressing.
