Butter Pecan Praline Loaf Cake: A Rich Southern-Style Dessert Recipe
Butter Pecan Praline Loaf Cake is a soft, buttery cake filled with toasted pecans and finished with a sweet praline glaze. It has the cozy flavor of brown sugar, vanilla, butter, and roasted nuts, with a moist crumb that makes each slice rich and satisfying.
This cake is perfect for holidays, family gatherings, afternoon coffee, dessert tables, or homemade gifts. It is simple enough to bake at home, but the praline topping gives it a special bakery-style finish.
What Makes This Loaf Cake Special?
The flavor comes from two main parts: toasted pecans and the praline glaze. Toasting the pecans brings out their nutty aroma and gives the cake a deeper flavor. The loaf itself is soft and buttery, while the topping is sweet, creamy, and slightly caramel-like.
Unlike a plain pound cake, this loaf has extra texture from chopped pecans and a glossy topping that soaks slightly into the cake. The result is moist, sweet, nutty, and full of warm homemade flavor.
Ingredients
For the Loaf Cake
- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- ¾ cup brown sugar
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- ½ cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt
- ¼ cup milk
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- 1 tablespoon butter for toasting the pecans
For the Praline Glaze
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ¼ cup unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons heavy cream or evaporated milk
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- ¼ cup chopped pecans
Step 1: Toast the Pecans
Start by placing a skillet over medium-low heat. Add one tablespoon of butter, then add the chopped pecans.
Stir them for 3 to 5 minutes until they smell warm and nutty. Be careful not to burn them because pecans can darken quickly.
Once toasted, remove them from the pan and let them cool. Toasting is a small step, but it makes a big difference. It gives the loaf a richer butter-pecan flavor instead of a plain nut taste.
Step 2: Prepare the Loaf Pan
Preheat the oven to 350°F / 175°C.
Grease a 9×5 inch loaf pan with butter or non-stick spray. For easier removal, line the pan with parchment paper, leaving a little paper hanging over the sides.
This helps you lift the loaf out cleanly after baking, especially once the praline glaze is added.
