Classic Church Cake: A Moist, Creamy, and Nostalgic Homemade Dessert Recipe

Classic Church Cake is a beloved old-fashioned dessert often served at church gatherings, potlucks, family celebrations, and community events. Known for its soft texture, rich flavor, and simple ingredients, this cake represents the kind of homemade baking that brings people together.

This cake is usually made with a tender vanilla-flavored cake base, a creamy topping or frosting, and sometimes a sprinkle of coconut, nuts, or simple decorations. It is not an overly complicated dessert, but its comforting taste and moist texture make it a favorite for generations.

The secret to a great church cake is keeping the cake light and moist while adding a creamy topping that complements the sweetness without overpowering it.

Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup sour cream or plain yogurt

For the Creamy Frosting

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2–3 tablespoons heavy cream or milk

Optional Toppings

  • Shredded coconut
  • Chopped pecans or walnuts
  • Sprinkles
  • Fresh berries
  • Caramel drizzle
  • Chocolate shavings

Step 1: Prepare the Baking Pan

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.

You can also line the bottom with parchment paper for easier serving.

A rectangular pan is traditional because church cakes are usually made in large batches and sliced into squares for sharing.

Step 2: Prepare the Dry Ingredients

In a medium bowl, combine:

  • Flour
  • Baking powder
  • Baking soda
  • Salt

Whisk everything together until evenly mixed.

Combining the dry ingredients first helps distribute the leavening agents throughout the cake, giving it an even rise and soft texture.

Step 3: Cream the Butter and Sugar

In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together using an electric mixer.

Continue mixing for about 3–5 minutes until the mixture becomes light, fluffy, and pale.

This step is important because it creates tiny air pockets in the batter. These air pockets help produce a soft and tender cake.

Step 4: Add the Eggs and Vanilla

Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.

Then add the vanilla extract and mix until combined.

Adding the eggs slowly helps maintain the smooth texture of the batter and prevents the mixture from separating.
