Salted Caramel Crackle: A Sweet and Crunchy Homemade Treat

Salted Caramel Crackle is an irresistible dessert snack that combines the deep sweetness of caramel, the richness of butter, the crunch of crispy layers, and a touch of sea salt to create the perfect balance of flavors.

This treat is known for its satisfying texture: a delicate crunch when you bite into it, followed by a buttery caramel flavor and a slightly salty finish. It is simple enough to make at home but impressive enough to serve at parties, holidays, gift exchanges, or dessert tables.

Unlike traditional caramel candies, Salted Caramel Crackle is designed to be broken into irregular pieces, giving it a rustic, homemade appearance. It is similar to caramel bark or homemade toffee, with a golden caramel coating that hardens into a crisp, sweet layer.

Why Salted Caramel Crackle Is So Addictive

The magic of this recipe comes from the contrast between sweet and salty.

  • The caramel provides a rich, buttery sweetness.
  • The salt enhances the caramel flavor and prevents the dessert from tasting overly sugary.
  • The crunchy base adds texture and makes every bite satisfying.
  • The chocolate topping (optional) adds a smooth, luxurious finish.

This dessert is perfect for anyone who loves the combination of caramel, chocolate, and a little salt.

Ingredients

For the Crackle Base

  • 40 to 50 salted crackers (such as saltine crackers)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt

For the Topping

  • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup chopped pecans, almonds, or walnuts (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon flaky sea salt for sprinkling

Optional Additions

  • White chocolate drizzle
  • Dark chocolate instead of semi-sweet chocolate
  • Toasted coconut flakes
  • Crushed pretzels
  • Caramel chips
  • Mini chocolate candies

Step 1: Prepare the Baking Tray

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Lightly grease the surface to prevent sticking.

Arrange the salted crackers in a single layer across the tray.

Try to place them close together so the caramel spreads evenly over the entire surface.

The crackers create the crunchy foundation of the dessert. Their light saltiness balances the sweetness of the caramel.

Step 2: Make the Caramel Mixture

Place a medium saucepan over medium heat.

Add the butter and allow it to melt completely.

Once melted, add the brown sugar and stir continuously until the sugar dissolves into the butter.

Bring the mixture to a gentle boil.

Continue cooking for about 3 to 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until the caramel becomes smooth, glossy, and slightly thickened.

You will notice the mixture changing from a grainy texture into a shiny caramel sauce.

Be careful not to cook it too long, as overheated caramel can become bitter or hard.
