Baked Philly Cheesesteak: A Comforting Oven-Baked Twist on a Classic Sandwich

The Philly cheesesteak is one of America’s most beloved sandwiches, known for its combination of thinly sliced beef, melted cheese, and sautéed onions packed into a soft roll. While the traditional version is cooked quickly on a griddle and served fresh, the Baked Philly Cheesesteak brings a comforting homemade twist to the classic recipe.

Instead of assembling individual sandwiches, this baked version combines all the signature flavors into a warm, cheesy dish that is easy to prepare for family dinners, gatherings, or meal prep. The oven allows the flavors to blend together beautifully, creating tender beef, caramelized vegetables, and a rich layer of melted cheese in every bite.

What Makes a Baked Philly Cheesesteak Special?

A great baked Philly cheesesteak keeps the heart of the original recipe while adding a cozy casserole-style experience. The key elements remain the same:

  • Tender beef: Traditionally made with thinly sliced ribeye, the beef provides a rich and savory foundation.
  • Sweet sautéed onions: Slowly cooked onions add natural sweetness and depth.
  • Colorful peppers: Green bell peppers bring freshness and a slight crunch.
  • Creamy melted cheese: Provolone, mozzarella, or a cheese sauce creates the signature cheesy texture.
  • Soft bread or rolls: These absorb the flavors and create the perfect bite.

The baking process allows the cheese to melt evenly while bringing all the ingredients together into a satisfying dish.

Ingredients Needed

To prepare a homemade Baked Philly Cheesesteak, you will need:

For the Cheesesteak Filling

  • 1 ½ pounds thinly sliced ribeye steak or shaved beef
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced (optional)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

For the Cheesy Layer

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup sour cream or mayonnaise
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded provolone cheese
  • Extra cheese for topping

For Assembly

  • 6 to 8 soft hoagie rolls, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • Optional: chopped parsley for garnish

Step-by-Step Method to Make Baked Philly Cheesesteak

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

Begin by preparing all your ingredients before cooking. Slice the onions and peppers into thin strips so they cook evenly. If using ribeye steak, place it in the freezer for about 20 minutes before slicing. Slightly chilled meat is easier to cut into thin pieces.

Mince the garlic and set the vegetables aside while preparing the beef.

Step 2: Cook the Vegetables

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and peppers and cook for about 5–7 minutes until they become soft and slightly caramelized.

Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant. Remove the vegetables from the pan and set them aside.

Cooking the vegetables first helps develop their sweetness and prevents excess moisture from making the baked dish soggy.

Step 3: Cook the Beef

Using the same skillet, add the sliced beef. Cook over medium-high heat until the meat is browned and cooked through.

Season the beef with salt, black pepper, Italian seasoning, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well so the flavors coat every piece.

Avoid overcooking the beef, as thin slices cook quickly and should remain tender.
