Ingredients You’ll Need
Egg Noodles
Wide or medium egg noodles work particularly well because their shape allows them to hold onto the buttery cooking liquid. Use a standard package of dried egg noodles.
Butter
Butter is the main source of richness in this recipe. Unsalted butter gives you more control over the salt level, while salted butter works perfectly well if you adjust the additional seasoning.
Chicken Broth
Chicken broth provides the liquid needed to cook the noodles while adding considerably more flavor than plain water. If you prefer a vegetarian version, vegetable broth can be used instead.
Garlic Powder
A small amount of garlic powder adds savory depth without overpowering the buttery flavor.
Black Pepper
Freshly ground black pepper gives the noodles a gentle bite and helps balance their richness.
Salt
The amount of salt you need will depend on how salty your broth and butter are, so it is best to taste toward the end and adjust as needed.
Fresh Parsley
Fresh parsley is optional, but it adds a pleasant fresh note and gives the finished noodles a little color.
Crockpot Buttered Egg Noodles Recipe
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: About 1½–2 hours, depending on the slow cooker
Total Time: About 2 hours
Servings: 6
Ingredients
- 12 ounces dried egg noodles
- 4 tablespoons butter, divided
- 4 cups chicken broth
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, optional
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese, optional
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Slow Cooker
Start by lightly greasing the inside of your slow cooker. This isn’t absolutely necessary, but it can make cleanup easier and helps reduce the chance of noodles sticking around the edges.
Add the chicken broth to the crockpot.
Step 2: Add the Butter and Seasonings
Cut the butter into several smaller pieces and add it to the broth.
Sprinkle in the garlic powder, black pepper, and salt. Stir briefly so the seasonings are distributed throughout the liquid.
At this point, the mixture will look very simple, but the butter and broth will create the flavorful base for the noodles.
Step 3: Add the Egg Noodles
Add the dried egg noodles directly to the slow cooker.
Gently press them down so they are mostly covered by the broth. Avoid aggressively stirring the noodles because dried egg noodles can break more easily than sturdier pasta.
If a few noodles are sitting above the liquid, that’s okay initially. They will soften as they cook.
Step 4: Cover and Cook
Place the lid securely on the slow cooker.
Cook on LOW for approximately 1½ to 2 hours, checking the noodles toward the end of the cooking time.
Slow cookers vary considerably in temperature, so don’t rely solely on the clock. The noodles are ready when they are tender but still have enough structure to hold their shape.
For the best texture, avoid cooking them for much longer than necessary. Egg noodles can become soft and mushy if they remain in hot liquid for too long.
