What Makes This Cheeseburger Shepherd’s Pie Bake Special?
Traditional shepherd’s pie usually features a savory meat and vegetable filling topped with mashed potatoes. This version takes that comforting structure in a more casual direction by incorporating classic cheeseburger-inspired ingredients.
The ground beef is browned with onion and garlic, then combined with a creamy, savory sauce and vegetables. Shredded cheddar adds the unmistakable cheeseburger element, while mashed potatoes create the golden topping that makes the dish feel like a classic casserole.
For an extra burger-inspired touch, you can add a small amount of ketchup and mustard to the filling. These ingredients should complement the beef rather than overpower it.
Ingredients
For the Mashed Potato Topping
- 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
- 4 tablespoons butter
- ½ cup milk, warmed
- ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
For the Cheeseburger Filling
- 1½ pounds ground beef
- 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
- 1½ cups frozen mixed vegetables
- 1 cup beef broth
- ½ cup sour cream
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon butter or cooking oil
For the Top
- ½ cup additional shredded cheddar cheese
- A little paprika or freshly ground black pepper, optional
- Chopped parsley or green onion, optional for serving
Step-by-Step Method
Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes
Place the peeled and chopped potatoes in a large saucepan and cover them with cold water. Add a generous pinch of salt and bring the water to a boil.
Reduce the heat and cook for approximately 15–20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender enough to pierce easily with a fork.
Drain them thoroughly and return them to the warm saucepan for a minute or two. This allows excess moisture to evaporate, helping create a fluffier mashed potato topping.
Add the butter, warm milk, salt, and black pepper. Mash until smooth and creamy. Stir in the ½ cup of shredded cheddar while the potatoes are still warm so the cheese melts into the mixture.
Set the mashed potatoes aside.
Step 2: Brown the Ground Beef
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Heat a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon as it browns.
Continue cooking until there is no visible pink meat remaining. If there is a large amount of excess grease, carefully drain some of it from the pan.
The browning step is important because it gives the beef a deeper, more savory flavor than simply simmering it in the sauce.
Step 3: Add the Onion and Garlic
Add the diced onion to the browned beef and cook for approximately 4–5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Once the onion begins to soften, add the minced garlic and cook for another 30–60 seconds.
Be careful not to let the garlic burn. You want it fragrant and lightly cooked.
