Pecan Pie Muffins: A Cozy Treat with All the Flavor of Classic Pecan Pie

If you love the rich, buttery filling and toasted pecans of a traditional pecan pie, these Pecan Pie Muffins are a wonderful way to enjoy those flavors in a simpler, handheld dessert. They have a tender, lightly sweet muffin-like exterior with a soft, gooey center packed with crunchy pecans. They are especially delicious when served warm, when the centers are at their most luscious.

These muffins are easy enough for a weekend breakfast but decadent enough to serve as a dessert during the holidays. Best of all, they don’t require making or rolling out a pie crust.

Why You’ll Love These Pecan Pie Muffins

There is something particularly satisfying about turning the flavors of a classic pie into individual portions. The combination of brown sugar, butter, vanilla, and toasted pecans creates a deep caramel-like flavor, while the eggs help give the muffins their soft, rich texture.

A few simple ingredients are all you need, and the batter comes together quickly. The most important part is preparing the muffin pan properly so the sticky pecan filling doesn’t cling to the sides.

Ingredients

For about 10–12 muffins, you’ll need:

  • 1 cup pecan halves or pieces, roughly chopped
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Optional additions

For a slightly different flavor, you can also add:

  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon bourbon
  • A pinch of nutmeg
  • A small amount of maple syrup for extra depth

The classic version is delicious on its own, so these additions are completely optional.

How to Make Pecan Pie Muffins Step by Step

Step 1: Prepare the Oven and Muffin Pan

Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Grease a standard 12-cup muffin pan generously with butter or nonstick baking spray. Pay particular attention to the sides and bottom of each cup because the brown sugar and pecans can become sticky as they bake.

You can also use paper liners, although generously greasing the pan often gives these muffins a particularly nice caramelized edge.

Step 2: Toast the Pecans

Place the chopped pecans in a dry skillet over medium-low heat.

Toast them for approximately 3–5 minutes, stirring frequently. You should begin to notice a warm, nutty aroma.

Be careful not to let them burn. Pecans can go from perfectly toasted to bitter surprisingly quickly.

Remove them from the heat and let them cool for a few minutes.

Why toast the pecans? Toasting brings out their natural oils and gives them a deeper, more pronounced flavor. It also adds a wonderful contrast to the soft center of the muffins.

Step 3: Combine the Dry Ingredients

In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together:

  • Brown sugar
  • Flour
  • Baking powder
  • Salt

If you’re using cinnamon or another dry spice, add it at this stage.

Break up any large lumps of brown sugar so the ingredients are evenly distributed.

Step 4: Mix the Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, whisk together the melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract.

Make sure the butter has cooled slightly before adding the eggs. If the butter is extremely hot, it can begin cooking the eggs.

Whisk until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
