Cheesy Ground Beef Puff Pastry Twists
Cheesy Ground Beef Puff Pastry Twists are the kind of savory snack that disappears almost as quickly as it comes out of the oven. Flaky, golden puff pastry is wrapped around a flavorful mixture of seasoned ground beef and melted cheese, then twisted into crisp, handheld bites. They are simple enough for a casual family snack but impressive enough to serve at a party, game night, brunch, or holiday gathering.
The best part is the contrast in texture: the pastry becomes beautifully crisp and buttery on the outside while the beef-and-cheese filling stays rich and savory inside. A little garlic, onion, and paprika add depth without overpowering the cheesy filling.
Ingredients
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed according to package directions
- 1/2 pound ground beef
- 1/2 small onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds or dried parsley, optional
- A little flour for rolling
Step 1: Prepare the Ground Beef Filling
Heat a skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef. Cook for several minutes, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon or spatula until it is evenly browned.
Add the diced onion and cook for another 3–4 minutes, until the onion softens. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, just until fragrant.
Drain excess grease if necessary. Then add the tomato paste, smoked paprika, Italian seasoning, black pepper, and salt. Stir everything together and cook for another minute.
Remove the skillet from the heat and allow the beef mixture to cool for several minutes. This is important because spreading very hot filling onto puff pastry can make the butter in the pastry soften too quickly.
Step 2: Add the Cheese
Once the beef mixture has cooled slightly, transfer it to a bowl. Stir in the shredded cheddar and mozzarella.
The cheddar provides a bold, savory cheese flavor, while mozzarella helps create that delicious melted, stretchy texture.
Taste the mixture and adjust the seasoning if needed.
Step 3: Prepare the Puff Pastry
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
Lightly flour your work surface and gently unfold the thawed puff pastry. If necessary, roll it slightly to smooth out the creases.
Try not to overwork the dough. You want the pastry to remain cold and firm so it can puff properly in the oven.
