Crispy Cheddar Cheese Breadsticks
There is something irresistible about freshly baked breadsticks with crisp, golden edges and a generous layer of melted cheddar cheese. These Crispy Cheddar Cheese Breadsticks combine a light, tender center with a crunchy exterior and plenty of savory cheese flavor. They are simple enough for a casual snack but delicious enough to serve alongside soups, pasta, salads, or a family dinner.
The secret is rolling the dough thin enough to become crisp while keeping it sturdy enough to hold the cheddar topping. A little garlic, Italian seasoning, and freshly grated cheese add extra flavor without overpowering the bread.
Ingredients
For the Dough
- 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon instant yeast
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
For the Cheddar Topping
- 1 ½ cups freshly shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ¼ teaspoon paprika
- 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese, optional
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, optional
How to Make Crispy Cheddar Cheese Breadsticks
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt. Stir briefly to distribute the ingredients evenly.
Pour in the warm water and olive oil. Mix with a wooden spoon until a rough dough begins to form.
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5–7 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough feels excessively sticky, add flour one tablespoon at a time. Avoid adding too much flour because a stiff dough can produce hard breadsticks.
Step 2: Let the Dough Rise
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl and turn it once so the surface is coated.
Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let the dough rest in a warm place for approximately 45–60 minutes, or until it has noticeably increased in size.
This resting period gives the yeast time to develop the dough’s texture and flavor.
