Chipped Beef Dip: A Creamy, Savory Party Favorite

When you need an easy appetizer that feels comforting, flavorful, and guaranteed to disappear quickly, Chipped Beef Dip is a classic choice. Made with tender pieces of dried beef folded into a rich, creamy mixture, this dip has a delicious combination of salty, savory, tangy, and cheesy flavors.

It is especially convenient for parties because most of the preparation can be done ahead of time. Serve it warm with crackers, toasted baguette slices, pretzels, celery, carrots, or your favorite crunchy vegetables.

Why You’ll Love This Chipped Beef Dip

This dip is simple enough for a casual snack but flavorful enough to serve at a holiday gathering or party. The dried beef provides a concentrated savory flavor, while cream cheese creates the thick, creamy base.

A little sour cream adds tanginess, while cheddar cheese gives the dip a satisfying cheesy finish. Green onions and Worcestershire sauce round everything out with freshness and depth.

Another advantage is that the dip can be prepared in advance and baked just before serving, making it ideal when you are entertaining.

Ingredients

For the Dip

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 4 ounces dried chipped beef, finely chopped
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley, optional

For the Topping

  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon chopped green onions or parsley, optional

For Serving

Serve with:

  • Crackers
  • Toasted baguette slices
  • Pretzel crisps
  • Tortilla chips
  • Celery sticks
  • Carrot sticks
  • Cucumber slices
  • Bell pepper strips

Step 1: Prepare the Chipped Beef

Dried chipped beef can be quite salty, so start by checking the package instructions. If the beef is especially salty, briefly rinse it under cool water and pat it thoroughly dry with paper towels.

Finely chop the beef into small pieces. Smaller pieces distribute throughout the dip more evenly and make every bite flavorful without creating large, chewy pieces.

Set the chopped beef aside while you prepare the creamy base.

Step 2: Soften the Cream Cheese

Place the cream cheese in a medium mixing bowl and allow it to soften at room temperature.

Softened cream cheese is much easier to mix and helps prevent lumps. If you forgot to take it out ahead of time, you can cut it into smaller cubes to help it soften more quickly.

Once softened, beat it with a spoon or electric mixer until smooth and creamy.

Step 3: Make the Creamy Base

Add the sour cream and mayonnaise to the softened cream cheese.

Mix until the ingredients are completely combined and the mixture has a smooth, creamy consistency.

Add the Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Stir again so the seasonings are evenly distributed.

Taste the mixture before adding any additional salt. The dried beef and cheese already contribute plenty of saltiness, so additional salt usually isn’t necessary.

Step 4: Add the Beef and Cheese

Fold the chopped chipped beef into the cream cheese mixture.

Add 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese and the sliced green onions. If you are using fresh parsley, add it at this stage as well.

Stir gently until everything is evenly incorporated.

The mixture should be thick and scoopable. If it seems unusually stiff, allow it to sit for a few minutes at room temperature before transferring it to the baking dish.

Step 5: Transfer to a Baking Dish

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Lightly grease a small baking dish or oven-safe serving dish. Transfer the chipped beef mixture into the dish and spread it into an even layer.

Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the top.

For an especially attractive presentation, sprinkle a little chopped green onion or parsley over the cheese after baking.
