Old-Fashioned Peanut Butter Pie: A Creamy, Comforting Classic

There is something wonderfully nostalgic about an old-fashioned peanut butter pie. It is the kind of dessert that feels like it belongs on a family dinner table, surrounded by familiar dishes and good conversation. With its buttery crust, rich peanut butter flavor, and smooth, creamy filling, this pie delivers a simple combination that has remained a favorite for generations.

Unlike elaborate desserts that depend on complicated techniques, peanut butter pie is all about getting a few classic ingredients to work together. The result is creamy without being overly heavy, sweet without completely hiding the peanut butter, and wonderfully satisfying when served cold.

This version keeps the traditional spirit of the dessert while making each step easy to follow.

Why You’ll Love This Old-Fashioned Peanut Butter Pie

The appeal of this pie is its simplicity. Peanut butter provides a rich, nutty foundation, while cream cheese adds a subtle tang and gives the filling structure. Powdered sugar brings sweetness and helps create a silky texture, and whipped cream makes everything lighter and fluffier.

A crumb crust adds just enough crunch to contrast with the soft filling. Once chilled, the pie becomes firm enough to slice neatly while remaining creamy on the fork.

It is also an excellent make-ahead dessert. In fact, preparing it several hours before serving gives the filling plenty of time to set and allows the flavors to come together.

Ingredients

For the Crust

  • 1 9-inch prepared graham cracker crust
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter, if making a homemade crust

You can use a store-bought crust for convenience, or make your own with graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, and a little sugar.

For the Peanut Butter Filling

  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

For the Peanut Butter Crumble

  • 1/3 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter

Optional Toppings

  • Whipped cream
  • Chopped peanuts
  • Chocolate shavings
  • A light drizzle of melted chocolate
  • Mini chocolate chips

Step 1: Prepare the Crust

If you’re using a prepared graham cracker crust, simply set it aside while you make the filling.

For a homemade crust, combine about 1 1/2 cups of finely crushed graham crackers with 5 tablespoons of melted butter and 2 tablespoons of sugar. Stir until the crumbs are evenly moistened.

Press the mixture firmly into the bottom and sides of a 9-inch pie dish. Pay particular attention to the corners, where loose crumbs can make the crust fall apart when the pie is sliced.

Chill the crust for about 20 to 30 minutes before adding the filling.

Step 2: Make the Peanut Butter Crumble

The small peanut butter crumbs scattered over the pie are one of the most charming parts of this dessert.

Place the powdered sugar in a small bowl and add the peanut butter. Using a fork, work the two ingredients together until small, coarse crumbs form.

Do not worry about making the crumbs perfectly uniform. A mixture of tiny crumbs and slightly larger pieces gives the finished pie a homemade appearance.

Set the crumble aside while preparing the filling.

Step 3: Beat the Cream Cheese and Peanut Butter

Place the softened cream cheese in a large mixing bowl.

Beat it until smooth and creamy, then add the peanut butter and continue mixing until the two ingredients are completely incorporated.

This step is important because softened cream cheese blends much more easily than cold cream cheese. If the cream cheese is still firm, the filling can become lumpy.

For the smoothest result, scrape down the sides of the bowl occasionally as you mix.
