No Plunger? No Problem: How to Unclog a Toilet with Dish Soap

Let’s face it — dealing with a clogged toilet is never fun. Whether it’s a minor backup or a full-on blockage, it’s the kind of situation no one wants to face. But before you reach for the plunger (or call a plumber), try this surprisingly simple and effective fix using something you likely already have in your kitchen: liquid dish soap.

The Plunger-Free Toilet Hack That Actually Works

Here’s how to handle a clog without any special tools:

What You’ll Need:

  • Liquid dish soap

  • A bucket or large container

  • Hot (but not boiling) water

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Add Dish Soap:
Pour about ½ cup of liquid dish soap into the toilet bowl. The soap helps to break down grease and waste while lubricating the pipes.

  2. Wait It Out:
Let the soap sit for 25–30 minutes. This gives it time to work its way down and loosen the clog.

  3. Pour in Hot Water:
After the wait, fill a bucket with hot water — not boiling, as that could crack porcelain. Carefully pour the hot water into the bowl from waist height to help add pressure.

  4. Watch It Drain:
If everything works as it should, you’ll notice the water level drop and the clog start to clear. If needed, you can repeat the process a second time.
