Would You Eat This Old-Fashioned Goulash?

There’s something deeply comforting about old-fashioned recipes—especially ones that have stood the test of time. Old-Fashioned Goulash is one of those dishes. It’s hearty, simple, and packed with flavor, bringing together tender pasta, rich tomato sauce, and savory ground beef in a way that feels like home in every bite.

Often called “American goulash,” this version is quite different from the Hungarian original. Instead of slow-braised beef chunks and paprika-heavy broth, this dish is a one-pot meal designed for convenience without sacrificing taste.

Let’s walk through how to make this classic step by step.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • 500g (1 lb) ground beef
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni (uncooked)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (400g) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (400g) tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Step 1: Sauté the Aromatics

Start by heating olive oil in a large pot or deep skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for about 3–4 minutes until it becomes soft and translucent.

Next, add the minced garlic and stir for another 30 seconds. This step builds the flavor base of your goulash.

Step 2: Brown the Ground Beef

Add the ground beef to the pot. Break it apart with a spoon and cook until it’s fully browned and no longer pink.

Once cooked, drain any excess fat if necessary. This keeps the dish from becoming too greasy while preserving the rich, meaty flavor.
