Four Onion Dip: A Rich, Layered Flavor Experience

If you think onion dip is simple, the Four Onion Dip will completely change your mind. This upgraded classic combines four different types of onions—each bringing its own texture and depth—to create a dip that’s creamy, savory, slightly sweet, and incredibly addictive. Perfect for parties, game nights, or even as a spread, this recipe is both comforting and impressive.

🧅 What Makes It Special?

Unlike traditional onion dips that rely on just one onion flavor, this version layers:

  • Yellow onions for a sweet, caramelized base
  • Red onions for a mild sharpness
  • Green onions (scallions) for freshness
  • Shallots for a subtle, gourmet touch

The result? A balanced, complex flavor that feels both homemade and elevated.

🛒 Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, finely sliced
  • 1 small red onion, finely chopped
  • 2 shallots, minced
  • 3–4 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • ½ cup cream cheese (softened)
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper (to taste)
  • Optional: a pinch of sugar (to enhance caramelization)

🍳 Step-by-Step Method

1. Caramelize the Yellow Onion

Start by melting butter with olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced yellow onion with a pinch of salt. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for about 20–25 minutes until the onions become deep golden and soft.

👉 Tip: Lower the heat if they start browning too quickly—slow cooking brings out natural sweetness.

2. Add Shallots and Red Onion

Once the yellow onions are caramelized, stir in the minced shallots and chopped red onion. Cook for another 8–10 minutes until everything softens and blends together.

👉 At this stage, you can add a tiny pinch of sugar if you want extra sweetness.
