Ground Beef Casserole: A Comforting, Flavor-Packed Classic

Ground beef casserole is one of those timeless dishes that combines simplicity, affordability, and rich, satisfying flavor. Perfect for busy weeknights or cozy family dinners, this dish layers seasoned beef, tender pasta or potatoes, a creamy or tomato-based sauce, and melted cheese into a warm, hearty bake. Below is a detailed, step-by-step guide to creating a delicious ground beef casserole from scratch.

Ingredients

Here’s a classic version using pasta as the base:

Main ingredients:

  • 500g ground beef
  • 2 cups pasta (penne, macaroni, or rotini)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups tomato sauce (or marinara)
  • 1 cup sour cream or cream cheese (for creaminess)
  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Optional additions:

  • 1 cup vegetables (bell peppers, corn, or peas)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika or Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon chili flakes (for a bit of heat)

Step-by-Step Method

Step 1: Prepare the Pasta

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook according to the package instructions until al dente (slightly firm to the bite).
Drain and set aside. Avoid overcooking, as the pasta will continue to cook in the oven later.

Step 2: Cook the Ground Beef

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 2–3 minutes until soft and translucent.
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.

Add the ground beef to the skillet. Break it apart with a spatula and cook until browned and fully cooked through.
Season with salt, pepper, and any additional spices like paprika or Italian seasoning.

Drain excess fat if necessary.

Step 3: Add the Sauce

Pour in the tomato sauce and stir well to combine with the beef mixture. Let it simmer for 5–7 minutes so the flavors blend together.
If you’re adding vegetables, mix them in at this stage and cook briefly until slightly tender.
