3. Add vanilla and baking soda

Remove the pan from heat. Quickly stir in the vanilla extract and baking soda.

The mixture will foam up slightly—that’s normal. The baking soda helps create a lighter, crispier coating instead of a hard, sticky caramel.

4. Coat the pretzels

Immediately pour the hot toffee over the pretzels on the baking sheet. Use a spatula or spoon to gently toss and spread so every pretzel gets coated.

Work fast here, because the toffee starts to thicken as it cools.

5. Bake to set the coating

Place the tray in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 8–10 minutes.

This step helps the toffee fully absorb into the pretzels and creates a more stable, crunchy coating.

6. Optional toppings

As soon as you take them out of the oven, you can:

  • Sprinkle chocolate chips on top (they’ll melt, then you can spread them like a drizzle)
  • Add chopped nuts for extra crunch
  • Lightly sprinkle sea salt for a gourmet sweet-salty finish

7. Cool completely

Let the pretzels cool on the tray for at least 30–45 minutes. As they cool, the toffee hardens into a glossy shell.

Once fully set, break them apart if they’ve stuck together.

Tips for Perfect Butter Toffee Pretzels

  • Stir constantly while making the toffee to prevent burning.
  • Don’t skip the baking step—it improves texture a lot.
  • Work quickly when coating the pretzels because the toffee thickens fast.
  • Use parchment paper to avoid sticking and make cleanup easier.
