Ingredients

For the Cabbage

  • 1 medium green cabbage, shredded
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon caraway seeds (optional)
  • ½ cup chicken broth or water

For the Dumplings

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Equipment Needed

  • Large skillet or Dutch oven
  • Mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Lid for cooking the cabbage

Step 1: Prepare the Cabbage

Remove any damaged outer leaves from the cabbage. Cut the cabbage into quarters and remove the tough core. Slice the cabbage into thin strips.

Peel and finely chop the onion.

Having the vegetables prepared beforehand makes the cooking process much smoother.

Step 2: Cook the Onion

Place a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat.

Add the butter and allow it to melt completely. Stir in the chopped onion and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onion becomes soft and translucent.

The onion provides a rich, sweet foundation for the dish.

Step 3: Add the Cabbage

Add the shredded cabbage to the skillet. Stir well to coat the cabbage with the butter and onions.

Season with salt, pepper, and caraway seeds if using.

Continue cooking for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring frequently. The cabbage will gradually soften and begin to develop a slightly golden color.

Step 4: Simmer Until Tender

Pour in the chicken broth or water.

Reduce the heat to low and cover the skillet with a lid. Allow the cabbage to simmer gently for about 20 minutes.

Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

The cabbage should become very tender while retaining a pleasant texture.
