Amish Onion Fritters

May be an image of food

Amish Onion Fritters are a simple, rustic dish that reflects the heart of Amish home cooking: inexpensive ingredients, minimal waste, and big flavor from humble pantry staples. These fritters are crispy on the outside, soft and slightly sweet on the inside, and heavily centered around onions folded into a seasoned batter and fried until golden.

They’re often served as a side dish, snack, or even a quick comfort meal, especially in rural Pennsylvania Dutch communities where frying batters is a long-standing tradition.

Amish Onion Fritters — Step-by-Step Method

Ingredients (classic version)

You don’t need anything fancy here—just basic kitchen staples:

  • 2 large onions (yellow or white work best)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika (optional but adds warmth)
  • 2/3 cup milk (adjust as needed)
  • 1 large egg
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil recommended)

Step 1: Prepare the onions

Start by peeling the onions and slicing them thinly.

You can:

  • Slice into thin half-moons for a more rustic texture
  • Or finely dice for smaller, more compact fritters

Place the cut onions into a bowl and separate the layers slightly with your fingers. This helps them distribute evenly in the batter.

Step 2: Mix the dry ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine:

  • Flour
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Paprika (if using)

Whisk everything together so the baking powder and seasoning are evenly distributed. This ensures your fritters puff slightly and fry evenly.
