Crispy Cheesy Garlic Wonton Cups: A Golden Bite-Sized Appetizer Recipe

Crispy Cheesy Garlic Wonton Cups are small, golden, crunchy bites filled with creamy cheese, soft potato or chicken filling, garlic butter flavor, and fresh herbs. They are baked in a muffin tin until the edges become crisp and the cheese melts beautifully on top.

The dish in the picture looks like crispy wrapper cups filled with a rich cheesy mixture, then baked until bubbly and golden brown. These are perfect for parties, family snacks, game nights, lunch boxes, or as a side dish with soup, salad, or grilled meat.

What makes this recipe special is the contrast of textures. The outside is thin, crispy, and lightly browned, while the inside is soft, creamy, cheesy, and full of garlic flavor. It looks fancy, but the method is simple.

Ingredients

For the Crispy Cups

  • 24 wonton wrappers or small square pastry wrappers
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter or oil for brushing
  • Cooking spray or extra butter for greasing the muffin tin

For the Filling

  • 2 cups cooked potatoes, mashed lightly
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ¼ cup cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream or mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley

Optional Add-Ins

  • Cooked shredded chicken
  • Crispy bacon bits
  • Green onions
  • Corn
  • Jalapeños
  • Mushrooms
  • Extra parmesan cheese

Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes

Start by boiling the potatoes until they are soft. Peel them if you prefer a smoother filling, or keep the skin on for a more rustic texture.

Drain the potatoes well, then mash them lightly with a fork or potato masher. The filling should not be too watery. If the potatoes are very wet, the wonton cups can become soft instead of crispy.

Let the mashed potatoes cool for a few minutes before mixing them with the cheese. If the potatoes are too hot, they may melt the cheese too early.

Step 2: Make the Garlic Butter Base

In a small pan, melt the butter over low heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, just until fragrant.

Do not brown the garlic too much. Burnt garlic can taste bitter.

This garlic butter will give the filling a rich, savory flavor and make the cheesy cups taste warm and comforting.
