Crockpot French Onion Chicken: A Rich, Comforting Slow Cooker Dinner
Crockpot French Onion Chicken is a warm, savory, and deeply flavorful dish made with tender chicken breasts or thighs, caramelized onion flavor, beefy broth, herbs, and melted cheese. It takes the classic taste of French onion soup and turns it into an easy slow cooker chicken dinner.
This recipe is perfect for busy days because the crockpot does most of the work. The chicken slowly cooks in a rich onion sauce until it becomes soft, juicy, and full of flavor. Near the end, cheese is added on top, creating a creamy, melty finish that makes the dish feel cozy and satisfying.
You can serve Crockpot French Onion Chicken over mashed potatoes, rice, pasta, egg noodles, or with crusty bread to soak up the sauce.
Ingredients
For the Chicken
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts or chicken thighs
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter
- 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup beef broth
- ½ cup chicken broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar, optional
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- ½ teaspoon dried rosemary, optional
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water, optional for thickening
For the Topping
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup shredded Swiss, provolone, or Gruyère cheese
- Fresh parsley, optional for garnish
Step 1: Prepare the Onions
Start by peeling and slicing the onions thinly. Yellow onions are the best choice because they become naturally sweet as they cook.
For deeper flavor, quickly sauté the onions before adding them to the crockpot. Heat olive oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat, then add the sliced onions. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring often, until they soften and begin to turn golden.
This step is optional, but it gives the dish a richer French onion flavor. If you are short on time, you can add the raw sliced onions directly to the slow cooker.
Step 2: Season the Chicken
Pat the chicken dry with paper towels. This helps the seasoning stick better.
Season both sides with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, and rosemary if using.
Chicken thighs will give a richer and juicier result, while chicken breasts create a lighter version. Both work well in this recipe.
Step 3: Add the Onions to the Crockpot
Place the sautéed or raw onions in the bottom of the crockpot.
Spread them evenly to create a flavorful base for the chicken. As the onions cook, they release sweetness and create a rich sauce.
Add the minced garlic over the onions.
Step 4: Add the Chicken
Place the seasoned chicken pieces on top of the onions.
Try to keep the chicken in a single layer so it cooks evenly. If the pieces overlap slightly, that is fine, but avoid stacking too much.
Step 5: Make the French Onion Sauce
In a bowl, mix the beef broth, chicken broth, Worcestershire sauce, and balsamic vinegar.
The beef broth gives the dish that classic French onion soup flavor, while the chicken broth keeps it balanced. Worcestershire sauce adds savory depth, and balsamic vinegar adds a slight sweetness and tang.
Pour the sauce over the chicken and onions.
