Crescent Roll Apple Dumplings: A Warm, Buttery Apple Dessert Recipe

Crescent Roll Apple Dumplings are a cozy homemade dessert made with tender apple slices wrapped in soft crescent dough, baked in a buttery cinnamon-sugar sauce until golden and bubbling. The outside becomes lightly crisp and flaky, while the inside turns soft, sweet, and juicy. It is one of those simple desserts that tastes like apple pie but takes much less time to prepare.

This recipe is perfect for family dinners, holiday gatherings, weekend baking, or when you want a quick dessert using basic ingredients. Served warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel drizzle, these apple dumplings feel rich, comforting, and homemade.

Why This Recipe Is Special

The beauty of Crescent Roll Apple Dumplings is that they use refrigerated crescent roll dough instead of traditional pie crust. This makes the recipe faster and easier while still giving a soft, buttery pastry texture.

The apples bake inside the dough, releasing their natural sweetness. Around them, a cinnamon-butter sauce thickens slightly and soaks into the bottom of the dumplings. The top stays golden and flaky, while the bottom becomes soft, syrupy, and full of flavor.

Ingredients

For the Apple Dumplings

  • 2 large apples, such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji
  • 2 cans refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg, optional
  • 1 cup lemon-lime soda or apple juice
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • A pinch of salt

Optional Toppings

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Whipped cream
  • Caramel sauce
  • Powdered sugar
  • Chopped pecans or walnuts

Step 1: Prepare the Baking Dish

Preheat your oven to 350°F / 175°C.

Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray. This prevents the dumplings from sticking and helps the sauce bubble around the edges.

A glass or ceramic baking dish works especially well because it holds heat evenly and allows the sauce to thicken nicely.

Step 2: Prepare the Apples

Wash and peel the apples. Cut each apple into 8 slices, removing the core and seeds.

Place the apple slices in a bowl and drizzle them with lemon juice. Toss gently.

The lemon juice helps keep the apples from browning and adds a small bright flavor that balances the sweetness of the sauce.

For a tart flavor, use Granny Smith apples. For a sweeter dessert, use Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji apples.

Step 3: Wrap the Apples in Crescent Dough

Open the crescent roll cans and separate the dough into triangles.

Place one apple slice at the wide end of each crescent triangle. Roll the dough around the apple, starting from the wide end and rolling toward the pointed end.

The apple should be wrapped snugly, but it does not need to be completely sealed. A little apple showing at the sides is fine.

Place each wrapped dumpling into the greased baking dish with the seam side down.

Arrange them in a single layer, leaving a little space between each one so they can puff up as they bake.
