Chipped Beef Cheese Ball: A Classic Creamy Party Appetizer

A Chipped Beef Cheese Ball is a classic savory appetizer made with cream cheese, dried beef, green onions, seasonings, and a crunchy outer coating. It is creamy, salty, rich, and perfect for serving with crackers, pretzels, toasted bread, or fresh vegetables.

This recipe is popular because it is simple to prepare, easy to make ahead, and always looks nice on a party table. The chipped beef adds a bold savory flavor, while the cream cheese creates a smooth base that holds everything together. Once shaped into a ball and coated with chopped beef, herbs, or nuts, it becomes a flavorful centerpiece for holidays, potlucks, game days, and family gatherings.

What Is a Chipped Beef Cheese Ball?

A chipped beef cheese ball is a cold appetizer made by mixing softened cream cheese with chopped dried beef and seasonings. The mixture is shaped into a ball, chilled until firm, and then rolled in extra chopped beef or toppings.

Chipped beef, also called dried beef, has a salty, smoky flavor that works beautifully with mild cream cheese. Because dried beef is already flavorful, the recipe does not need many complicated ingredients.

Ingredients

For the Cheese Ball

  • 16 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 jar chipped beef or dried beef, finely chopped
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 green onions, finely sliced
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon sour cream, optional for a softer texture

For the Outside Coating

  • ½ cup chopped chipped beef
  • 2 tablespoons chopped green onions or parsley
  • ¼ cup chopped pecans or walnuts, optional

For Serving

  • Crackers
  • Pretzels
  • Toasted baguette slices
  • Celery sticks
  • Carrot sticks
  • Cucumber slices

Step 1: Soften the Cream Cheese

Start by placing the cream cheese at room temperature for about 30 to 45 minutes.

This is an important step because softened cream cheese mixes much more easily. If the cream cheese is too cold, the mixture can become lumpy and difficult to shape.

Place the softened cream cheese in a large mixing bowl.

Step 2: Prepare the Chipped Beef

Remove the chipped beef from the jar or package.

Chipped beef is usually very salty, so you can quickly rinse it under cold water if you want a milder flavor. After rinsing, pat it completely dry with paper towels.

Chop the beef into small pieces. Save some of the chopped beef for coating the outside of the cheese ball later.

The pieces should be small enough to blend smoothly into the cream cheese mixture.
