Classic Creamy Dill Egg Salad Sandwich: A Fresh, Comforting Homemade Recipe

A Classic Creamy Dill Egg Salad Sandwich is one of those simple recipes that never goes out of style. It is creamy, fresh, lightly tangy, and full of comforting flavor. Made with boiled eggs, mayonnaise, mustard, fresh dill, crunchy celery, and soft bread, this sandwich is perfect for lunch, picnics, meal prep, or a quick homemade snack.

What makes this egg salad special is the dill. Dill gives the filling a bright, fresh flavor that balances the richness of the eggs and mayonnaise. The result is a sandwich that tastes creamy but not heavy, simple but not boring.

Ingredients

For the Egg Salad

  • 6 large eggs
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard or yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice or pickle juice
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, finely chopped
  • 1 small celery stalk, finely diced
  • 1 tablespoon red onion or green onion, finely chopped
  • ¼ teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ⅛ teaspoon garlic powder, optional
  • ⅛ teaspoon paprika, optional

For the Sandwich

  • 4 slices sandwich bread, toasted or soft
  • Lettuce leaves, optional
  • Sliced tomato, optional
  • Extra dill for garnish, optional

Step 1: Boil the Eggs

Place the eggs in a saucepan and cover them with cold water. The water should sit about one inch above the eggs.

Put the pan over medium-high heat and bring the water to a boil. Once it starts boiling, turn off the heat, cover the pan, and let the eggs sit for about 10 to 12 minutes.

This method helps the eggs cook evenly and prevents the yolks from becoming too dry.

Step 2: Cool the Eggs

After the eggs are cooked, transfer them immediately to a bowl of ice water.

Let them sit for at least 5 to 10 minutes. Cooling the eggs quickly stops the cooking process and makes them easier to peel.

Once cooled, gently tap each egg on the counter and peel off the shell.

Step 3: Chop the Eggs

Place the peeled eggs on a cutting board.

Chop them into small pieces using a knife. For a chunkier egg salad, leave the pieces slightly larger. For a smoother filling, chop them finely or mash them lightly with a fork.

A good egg salad should have texture, so avoid turning the eggs into a completely smooth paste.
