Cheeseburger Tater Tot Bites: A Crispy, Cheesy Mini Appetizer Recipe

Cheeseburger Tater Tot Bites are a fun, bite-sized snack made with crispy tater tots, seasoned ground beef, melted cheese, pickles, and classic burger toppings. They taste like mini cheeseburgers, but instead of using buns, the base is made from golden crunchy potato tots.

This recipe is perfect for parties, game nights, family snacks, potlucks, or casual weekend meals. Each bite has the flavor of a cheeseburger with the texture of crispy potatoes. The outside is crunchy, the beef is savory, and the melted cheese makes everything rich and satisfying.

Why Cheeseburger Tater Tot Bites Are So Good

The best part of this recipe is the combination of comfort foods. Tater tots bring a crispy potato base, while the beef mixture gives that classic burger flavor. Cheese melts over the top and holds the filling together. Pickles, ketchup, mustard, and onions add the familiar taste of a real cheeseburger.

They are also easy to serve because they are small, neat, and made in a muffin tin. You can prepare a whole tray at once, making them a great appetizer for guests.

Ingredients

For the Tater Tot Cups

  • 48 frozen tater tots
  • Cooking spray or melted butter for greasing
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

For the Cheeseburger Filling

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

For the Topping

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella or Monterey Jack cheese
  • ¼ cup chopped pickles
  • 2 tablespoons chopped green onions or parsley, optional
  • Extra ketchup, mustard, or burger sauce for serving

Step 1: Prepare the Muffin Tin

Preheat your oven to 425°F / 220°C.

Grease a mini muffin tin well with cooking spray or melted butter. This is important because the tater tots can stick if the pan is dry.

Place about 2 to 3 frozen tater tots into each muffin cup, depending on the size of your muffin tin.

Bake the tater tots for about 10 minutes. This softens them enough so they can be shaped into cups.

Step 2: Shape the Tater Tot Cups

Remove the muffin tin from the oven.

Using the back of a small spoon, shot glass, or tart tamper, gently press the softened tater tots down and up the sides of each muffin cup.

The goal is to create a small potato cup that can hold the beef filling.

Sprinkle the cups lightly with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.

Return the muffin tin to the oven and bake for another 10 to 12 minutes, or until the tater tot cups become golden and crisp.

Step 3: Cook the Ground Beef

While the tater tot cups are baking, prepare the cheeseburger filling.

Place a skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and chopped onion.

Cook until the beef is browned and the onion becomes soft. Break the meat apart with a spoon as it cooks.

Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.

Drain any excess grease from the skillet so the filling does not make the tater tot cups soggy.

Step 4: Season the Beef

Add ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, paprika, onion powder, and garlic powder to the cooked beef.

Stir everything together and let it cook for 2 to 3 minutes.

The mixture should be flavorful and slightly moist, but not watery. If it looks too wet, cook it for another minute until the extra liquid evaporates.

This beef filling should taste like a classic cheeseburger.
