Amish Hamburger Steak Bake: A Hearty Old-Fashioned Casserole Dinner

Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a warm, filling, country-style comfort dish made with seasoned ground beef patties, tender potatoes, onions, and a creamy homemade gravy. It has the flavor of classic hamburger steak, but instead of cooking everything separately, the ingredients are layered and baked together until rich, tender, and full of savory flavor.

This recipe is simple, budget-friendly, and perfect for family dinners. It uses everyday ingredients, but the result tastes like a cozy farmhouse meal. The beef patties become juicy, the potatoes soak up the gravy, and the whole dish comes out creamy, hearty, and satisfying.

What Makes This Dish Special?

The beauty of Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is its simplicity. It does not need fancy ingredients or complicated cooking. Ground beef is shaped into patties, browned for flavor, then baked with potatoes and onions in a creamy gravy.

As it bakes, the juices from the beef mix with the sauce, creating a deep savory flavor. The potatoes become soft and tender, while the gravy thickens around everything. It is the kind of meal that feels homemade, comforting, and complete.

Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs or crushed crackers
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika

For the Bake

  • 5 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 ½ cups beef broth
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup or cream of chicken soup
  • ½ cup milk or heavy cream
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, optional

Step 1: Prepare the Ground Beef Mixture

Place the ground beef in a large mixing bowl.

Add the chopped onion, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika.

Mix everything gently with your hands or a spoon. Do not overmix the beef because that can make the patties tough. Mix only until the ingredients are evenly combined.

The breadcrumbs and egg help the patties hold their shape while baking.

Step 2: Shape the Hamburger Steaks

Divide the beef mixture into 6 to 8 equal portions.

Shape each portion into an oval or round patty, similar to a small hamburger steak. Try to make them about the same thickness so they cook evenly.

Set the patties on a plate while you prepare the skillet.

Step 3: Brown the Beef Patties

Heat the oil and butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

Add the hamburger steaks to the skillet. Brown them for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side.

They do not need to be fully cooked at this stage. The goal is only to brown the outside and create flavor.

Once browned, remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
