Chocolate Possum Pie: A Creamy Southern Layered Dessert Recipe
Chocolate Possum Pie is a rich, chilled dessert made with a buttery pecan crust, a smooth cream cheese layer, a deep chocolate pudding layer, and a fluffy whipped topping. Despite the funny name, this dessert contains no possum. The name comes from the idea that the pie “plays possum” because it looks simple on the outside, but inside it hides several delicious layers.
This pie is creamy, cool, sweet, nutty, and chocolatey. It is perfect for holidays, Sunday dinners, potlucks, family gatherings, or anytime you want a make-ahead dessert that feels comforting and homemade.
What Makes Chocolate Possum Pie Special?
The best part of Chocolate Possum Pie is the contrast between the layers. The crust is slightly crisp and nutty. The cream cheese layer is sweet and tangy. The chocolate layer is smooth and rich. The whipped topping makes the pie light and soft.
When chilled, the layers set beautifully, making every slice creamy and clean. It is similar to a chocolate cream pie, but with more texture and a richer Southern-style flavor.
Ingredients
For the Pecan Crust
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- ¾ cup finely chopped pecans
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- ¼ teaspoon salt
For the Cream Cheese Layer
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup whipped topping or freshly whipped cream
For the Chocolate Layer
- 1 package instant chocolate pudding mix
- 1 package instant vanilla pudding mix, optional for a softer chocolate flavor
- 2 ½ cups cold milk
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder, optional for deeper chocolate taste
For the Topping
- 2 cups whipped topping or whipped cream
- ¼ cup chopped pecans
- Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder, optional
Step 1: Prepare the Pie Dish
Use a 9-inch pie dish or a small rectangular baking dish.
Lightly grease the dish with butter or non-stick spray. This helps the crust release more easily when slicing.
Preheat the oven to 350°F / 175°C.
Step 2: Make the Pecan Crust
In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, softened butter, chopped pecans, sugar, and salt.
Mix with a fork or your fingers until the ingredients come together into a crumbly dough. The mixture should feel slightly soft and buttery, not dry.
Press the crust mixture firmly into the bottom of the pie dish and slightly up the sides.
Try to make the layer even so the pie has a strong base.
Step 3: Bake the Crust
Place the crust in the preheated oven and bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until it becomes lightly golden.
Do not overbake it. The crust should smell buttery and nutty, but it should not become too dark.
Remove the crust from the oven and let it cool completely before adding the filling.
This is important because a warm crust can melt the cream cheese layer.
