Nutella Cream Cheese Danish Tart: A Rich, Flaky Step-by-Step Dessert Recipe
Nutella Cream Cheese Danish Tart is a beautiful pastry dessert made with a buttery flaky crust, a smooth sweet cream cheese layer, and a rich chocolate-hazelnut Nutella topping. It has the flavor of a bakery-style Danish but is much easier to make at home. The outside is crisp and golden, while the inside is creamy, chocolatey, and slightly tangy from the cream cheese.
This tart is perfect for breakfast, brunch, dessert tables, holidays, family gatherings, or a sweet weekend treat. It looks elegant, tastes indulgent, and can be made with simple ingredients like puff pastry, cream cheese, Nutella, sugar, and eggs.
Why This Tart Is Special
The magic of this recipe comes from the contrast between the layers. Puff pastry gives the tart a light, crispy, buttery base. The cream cheese filling adds a smooth cheesecake-like texture. Nutella brings a deep chocolate-hazelnut flavor that melts beautifully into the filling.
When baked, the edges puff up and turn golden, while the center stays soft and creamy. A light dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of melted chocolate makes it look like something from a bakery.
Ingredients
For the Tart Base
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 1 egg, beaten, for egg wash
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar, optional for sprinkling
For the Cream Cheese Filling
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice, optional
For the Nutella Layer
- ½ cup Nutella
- 1 tablespoon heavy cream or milk, optional for easier spreading
Optional Toppings
- Powdered sugar
- Chocolate drizzle
- Chopped hazelnuts
- Fresh strawberries
- Sliced bananas
- Crushed cookies
Step 1: Prepare the Puff Pastry
Start by removing the puff pastry from the freezer and letting it thaw according to the package instructions. The pastry should be soft enough to unfold, but still cold.
Do not let it become too warm, because warm puff pastry can become sticky and may not rise properly in the oven.
Place the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Gently roll it out just a little to smooth the folds and make it even.
Step 2: Shape the Tart
Transfer the pastry to a parchment-lined baking tray.
Use a knife to lightly score a border around the pastry, about ½ inch from the edge. Do not cut all the way through. This border will puff up during baking and create a raised edge around the tart.
Use a fork to prick the center of the pastry several times. This helps prevent the middle from puffing too much, while the edges rise beautifully.
Step 3: Make the Cream Cheese Filling
In a mixing bowl, add the softened cream cheese and sugar.
Beat until smooth and creamy. The cream cheese must be soft, or the filling may become lumpy.
Add the egg yolk, vanilla extract, flour, and lemon juice if using. Mix again until everything is fully combined.
The filling should be thick, smooth, and easy to spread. The flour helps the filling set while baking, and the lemon juice adds a light freshness that balances the sweetness.
Step 4: Warm the Nutella Slightly
Spoon the Nutella into a small bowl.
If it is too thick to spread, warm it for about 10 to 15 seconds in the microwave. You can also mix in one tablespoon of milk or heavy cream to make it softer.
The Nutella should be spreadable, but not hot. If it is too warm, it can melt the pastry butter before baking.
