Cinnamon Rolls with Cream Cheese Frosting: A Soft, Sweet, and Irresistible Homemade Recipe

Cinnamon Rolls with Cream Cheese Frosting are one of the most beloved homemade baked treats. They are made with soft, fluffy yeast dough rolled around a buttery cinnamon-sugar filling, baked until golden, and covered with a smooth layer of rich cream cheese frosting.

The perfect cinnamon roll should be tender and airy on the inside, slightly golden on the outside, filled with warm cinnamon flavor, and finished with a creamy frosting that melts into every swirl. This recipe explains the complete method step by step so you can make bakery-style cinnamon rolls right in your own kitchen.

Why These Cinnamon Rolls Are Special

What makes cinnamon rolls so delicious is the combination of textures and flavors. The dough is soft and slightly sweet, the cinnamon filling becomes caramel-like as it bakes, and the cream cheese frosting adds a creamy, slightly tangy balance to the sweetness.

Although cinnamon rolls require some waiting time because of the yeast, the process is simple. Most of the work is just allowing the dough to rise and develop its fluffy texture.

Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Cinnamon Filling

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

For the Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2–3 tablespoons milk or heavy cream

Step 1: Prepare the Yeast Mixture

Begin by warming the milk until it is slightly warm to the touch. It should not be hot because high temperatures can kill the yeast.

Pour the warm milk into a bowl and add:

  • A small amount of sugar
  • The yeast

Stir gently and let it sit for 5–10 minutes.

The yeast should become foamy on the surface. This means it is active and ready to help the dough rise.

If there is no foam, the yeast may be old or the milk may have been too hot or too cold.

Step 2: Make the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine:

  • Flour
  • Remaining sugar
  • Salt

Mix the dry ingredients together.

Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract.

Stir until a soft dough forms.

The dough should feel slightly sticky but still manageable. If it is too wet, add a little more flour, one tablespoon at a time.

Step 3: Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface.

Knead it for about 8–10 minutes.

During kneading, the dough will become smoother and more elastic. This process develops gluten, which gives the cinnamon rolls their soft, stretchy texture.

A properly kneaded dough should feel soft and spring back slightly when pressed.

Step 4: Let the Dough Rise

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl.

Cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap.

Allow it to rise in a warm place for about 1–2 hours, or until it doubles in size.

The rising time depends on room temperature. A warmer environment will help the dough rise faster.

This step is important because it creates the light, fluffy texture of the rolls.

Step 5: Prepare the Cinnamon Filling

While the dough rises, prepare the filling.

In a small bowl, combine:

  • Softened butter
  • Brown sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Salt

Mix until it becomes a smooth, spreadable paste.

The brown sugar and butter will melt during baking, creating a sweet cinnamon caramel layer inside the rolls.

Step 6: Roll Out the Dough

Once the dough has doubled in size, gently press it down to remove excess air.

Place it on a floured surface.

Roll the dough into a large rectangle, approximately:

15 × 10 inches

Try to keep the thickness even so all rolls bake at the same speed.
