Chicken Cordon Bleu Puff Pastry Braid
If you love the classic combination of tender chicken, savory ham, and melted cheese, this Chicken Cordon Bleu Puff Pastry Braid turns those familiar flavors into a golden, flaky centerpiece that feels special without being difficult to make. Instead of breading and frying individual chicken breasts, the filling is wrapped inside buttery puff pastry and baked until beautifully crisp.
The result is a delicious contrast of textures: crisp, flaky pastry on the outside and a creamy, cheesy chicken-and-ham filling inside. It works wonderfully for a family dinner, weekend lunch, or an easy dish when you want something that looks more impressive than the effort required.

Ingredients
For the Filling
- 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded or finely chopped
- 6 slices deli ham, chopped
- 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, optional
For the Pastry
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed according to package directions
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese, optional
- Sesame seeds or poppy seeds, optional
Step 1: Prepare the Chicken
Start with fully cooked chicken. Rotisserie chicken is especially convenient, but leftover roasted or baked chicken works just as well.
Remove the skin and bones if necessary, then shred or finely chop the meat. Avoid making the pieces too large because smaller pieces will distribute more evenly throughout the braid.
If your chicken is freshly cooked, allow it to cool before mixing it with the other ingredients. A hot filling can soften the puff pastry and make it harder to work with.
Step 2: Make the Creamy Filling
Place the softened cream cheese in a large mixing bowl. Add the Dijon mustard, mayonnaise, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt.
Stir until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
Add the chicken, chopped ham, and shredded Swiss cheese. Gently fold everything together until the ingredients are evenly combined.
If you’re using parsley, stir it in at this stage.
Taste the mixture and adjust the seasoning if needed. Remember that ham, Swiss cheese, and Dijon mustard already provide plenty of flavor, so you don’t need a lot of additional salt.
Step 3: Prepare the Puff Pastry
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Place the thawed puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured work surface or directly on the parchment if it is easy to handle. Gently roll it into a rectangle if necessary, but avoid rolling it too thin.
The pastry should remain cold and firm enough to handle. If it becomes very soft or sticky, place it in the refrigerator for several minutes before continuing.
