This recipe is perfect for family dinners, holiday meals, Sunday gatherings, or whenever you want an easy dish that feels special.

Why Amish Cranberry Chicken Is Special

Amish cooking is known for its simple preparation and homemade flavors. Instead of complicated techniques, the focus is on quality ingredients and slow cooking.

This chicken recipe stands out because:

  • The cranberry sauce creates a beautiful sweet-and-tart glaze.
  • The chicken stays moist and tender during baking.
  • The combination of fruit and savory seasoning creates a unique flavor.
  • It requires minimal preparation but looks impressive when served.

The result is a comforting meal that pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes, rice, roasted vegetables, or fresh bread.

Ingredients

For the Chicken

  • 6 chicken thighs or chicken breasts (about 3 pounds)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter

For the Cranberry Sauce

  • 1 can (14 ounces) whole cranberry sauce
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup orange juice
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

Optional Garnish

  • Fresh cranberries
  • Chopped parsley
  • Orange zest
  • Fresh rosemary

Step 1: Prepare the Chicken

Begin by cleaning and drying the chicken pieces with paper towels.

Removing excess moisture helps the chicken brown better and allows the seasoning to stick properly.

Season both sides of the chicken with:

  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Paprika

Allow the chicken to rest for 10 to 15 minutes so the seasoning begins to absorb.

Step 2: Brown the Chicken (Optional but Recommended)

Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

Place the chicken pieces in the pan and cook for about 3 to 4 minutes per side until lightly golden.

You do not need to cook the chicken completely at this stage. The goal is only to create a flavorful outer layer.

Browning adds extra depth because the caramelized surface of the chicken mixes with the cranberry sauce during baking.

Step 3: Prepare the Cranberry Sauce Mixture

In a medium bowl, combine:

  • Whole cranberry sauce
  • Brown sugar
  • Orange juice
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Dijon mustard
  • Ketchup
  • Garlic
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Ginger
  • Cinnamon

Whisk everything together until smooth.

The cranberry sauce provides sweetness and fruit flavor, while the vinegar and mustard balance it with a slight tanginess.

The orange juice adds freshness and enhances the cranberry flavor.

Step 4: Arrange the Chicken in the Baking Dish

Preheat the oven to:

375°F (190°C)

Place the browned chicken pieces in a baking dish.

Arrange them in a single layer so each piece can absorb the sauce evenly.

Pour the cranberry mixture over the chicken, making sure every piece is coated.

For extra flavor, spoon some sauce underneath the chicken as well.

Step 5: Bake the Chicken Slowly

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil.

Bake for:

  • 35–45 minutes for chicken breasts
  • 45–55 minutes for chicken thighs

The chicken is ready when the internal temperature reaches:

165°F (74°C)

During cooking, the cranberry sauce will become thicker and turn into a glossy glaze.

Halfway through baking, spoon some sauce over the chicken pieces to keep them moist and flavorful.
