Seafood Salad: A Fresh, Creamy, and Flavorful Step-by-Step Recipe

Seafood Salad is a light yet satisfying dish that combines tender seafood with crisp vegetables and a creamy, well-seasoned dressing. It is a popular choice for summer lunches, holiday buffets, picnics, potlucks, and elegant appetizers. The combination of delicate seafood, crunchy vegetables, and a smooth dressing creates a refreshing salad that is both flavorful and filling.

This recipe features a mixture of imitation crab meat or cooked seafood, crisp celery, red onion, fresh herbs, and a creamy dressing made with mayonnaise, lemon juice, and simple seasonings. The salad can be served on its own, over lettuce, in sandwiches, stuffed into avocados, or alongside crackers.

Why You’ll Love This Seafood Salad

Seafood Salad is quick to prepare and can be made ahead of time, allowing the flavors to develop as it chills. The creamy dressing coats every piece of seafood while fresh vegetables provide a satisfying crunch. The bright citrus flavor from the lemon balances the richness of the mayonnaise, resulting in a refreshing and delicious dish.

It’s also highly versatile. You can use imitation crab, shrimp, lobster, scallops, or a combination of your favorite seafood to create your own variation.

Ingredients

For the Salad

  • 1 pound imitation crab meat (or cooked shrimp, lobster, or mixed seafood)
  • 2 celery stalks, finely diced
  • ¼ cup red onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)

For the Dressing

  • ¾ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream or plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar or white vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)

Optional Additions

  • 1 hard-boiled egg, chopped
  • ½ cup diced cucumber
  • ¼ cup sweet pickle relish
  • 1 tablespoon chopped green onions
  • Paprika for garnish
  • Lemon wedges for serving

Step 1: Prepare the Seafood

If using imitation crab meat, remove it from the packaging and gently pat it dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.

Cut the crab meat into bite-sized pieces. If using flake-style imitation crab, gently separate the pieces with your fingers.

If using cooked shrimp, peel and devein them if necessary, then chop larger shrimp into bite-sized pieces. If using lobster or scallops, ensure they are fully cooked and cooled before cutting them into small pieces.

Place the prepared seafood into a large mixing bowl.

Step 2: Prepare the Vegetables

Wash the celery thoroughly and dice it into small pieces.

Finely chop the red onion so it blends evenly throughout the salad without overpowering the seafood.

Chop the fresh parsley and dill.

If using cucumber, remove the seeds if necessary and dice it into small cubes.

Add all of the prepared vegetables and herbs to the bowl with the seafood.
