Homemade Churro Bites: A Crispy, Cinnamon-Sugar Treat Made from Scratch

There is something irresistible about churros: their golden, crunchy exterior, soft and fluffy center, and the sweet aroma of cinnamon and sugar that fills the kitchen while they are cooking. While traditional churros are often served as long sticks, homemade churro bites offer a fun and convenient twist. These small, bite-sized treats are perfect for parties, family gatherings, afternoon snacks, or simply enjoying with a warm cup of coffee or chocolate.

Unlike store-bought versions, making churro bites at home allows you to control the freshness, texture, and flavor. The process is simple: a basic dough is prepared on the stovetop, shaped into small pieces, fried until perfectly golden, and coated generously with cinnamon sugar.

What Makes Homemade Churro Bites Special?

Churro bites are loved for their contrast of textures. The outside becomes lightly crisp from frying, while the inside stays tender and airy. The cinnamon sugar coating adds a sweet, slightly spicy flavor that makes every bite enjoyable.

Another advantage of making them at home is their versatility. They can be served traditionally with melted chocolate sauce, caramel, or dulce de leche, or enjoyed plain as a quick homemade dessert.

Ingredients You Will Need

For the Churro Dough:

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg (optional, for a softer texture)

For Frying:

  • Vegetable oil or another neutral frying oil

For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:

  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Optional Dipping Sauces:

  • Melted chocolate
  • Caramel sauce
  • Dulce de leche
  • Sweetened cream cheese dip

Step-by-Step Method to Make Homemade Churro Bites

Step 1: Prepare the Cinnamon Sugar Mixture

Before making the dough, prepare the coating so it is ready when the churro bites come out of the oil.

In a shallow bowl, combine:

  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Mix well until the cinnamon is evenly distributed throughout the sugar. Set aside.

Step 2: Make the Churro Dough

Start by heating the water, sugar, salt, and butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir occasionally until the butter melts completely and the mixture begins to simmer.

Once the liquid is hot, reduce the heat and add the flour all at once. Quickly stir with a wooden spoon until the mixture forms a thick dough.

Continue stirring for about 1–2 minutes. The dough should become smooth and pull away from the sides of the pan.

Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the dough to cool slightly for a few minutes.

Step 3: Add Flavor and Improve the Texture

Add the vanilla extract and mix well.

If you want softer and slightly richer churro bites, add one egg after the dough has cooled enough that it will not cook immediately. Stir vigorously until the egg is fully incorporated.

The final dough should be thick, smooth, and easy to pipe.
