Maple Cookies with Maple Icing: A Sweet Autumn-Inspired Treat Made from Scratch
Maple cookies with maple icing are the perfect combination of buttery sweetness and rich, natural maple flavor. Inspired by cozy autumn mornings, snowy winter afternoons, and the comforting aroma of freshly baked treats, these cookies bring together a soft, tender texture with the deep caramel-like taste of pure maple syrup. The finishing touch is a smooth maple icing that adds a delicate sweetness and a beautiful glossy appearance.
Unlike ordinary sugar cookies, maple cookies have a unique flavor profile. The maple syrup does more than simply sweeten the dough—it adds warmth, moisture, and a subtle earthy richness that makes every bite memorable. Whether prepared for holidays, family gatherings, or simply enjoyed with a cup of coffee or tea, these cookies are an irresistible homemade dessert.
Ingredients
For the Maple Cookies
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened at room temperature
- ¾ cup brown sugar, packed
- ½ cup pure maple syrup
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon maple extract (optional, for a stronger maple flavor)
For the Maple Icing
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
- 2–4 tablespoons milk or heavy cream (adjust consistency as needed)
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- A small pinch of salt
Optional decorations:
- Chopped pecans
- Cinnamon sprinkle
- Maple sugar crystals
- Fall-themed sprinkles
Step-by-Step Method
Step 1: Prepare the Cookie Dough
Begin by preparing the dry ingredients. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mixing these ingredients first ensures that the leavening agents are evenly distributed throughout the dough, creating cookies with a consistent texture.
In a separate large bowl, beat the softened butter and brown sugar together using an electric mixer. Continue mixing for about 2–3 minutes until the mixture becomes light, creamy, and slightly fluffy. This step is important because incorporating air into the butter helps create a softer cookie.
Add the maple syrup, egg, vanilla extract, and maple extract if using. Mix until everything is fully combined. The dough should have a smooth, golden appearance with a strong maple aroma.
Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture. Mix just until the flour disappears. Avoid overmixing, as this can make the cookies dense instead of soft.
Step 2: Chill the Dough
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate the dough for at least 1 hour.
Chilling allows the butter to firm up, preventing the cookies from spreading too much during baking. It also gives the maple flavor time to develop, resulting in a richer and more delicious cookie.
If you want to prepare ahead, the dough can be refrigerated overnight.
Step 3: Shape the Cookies
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
Lightly flour your work surface and roll out the chilled dough to about ¼ inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to create your desired shapes. Maple leaf shapes are especially beautiful for fall celebrations, but circles, hearts, or stars work perfectly too.
Place the shaped cookies onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving a little space between each cookie.
