Candied Kielbasa: Sweet, Sticky, and Irresistibly Savory
If you love recipes that combine a little sweetness with a savory, smoky bite, Candied Kielbasa is one you’ll want to keep in your recipe collection. This simple dish transforms slices of kielbasa into glossy, caramelized bites coated in a rich brown-sugar glaze.
The beauty of candied kielbasa is its simplicity. You only need a handful of everyday ingredients, and most of the cooking time is hands-off. As the kielbasa warms, the sugar melts into a sticky sauce that clings to every piece, creating beautifully caramelized edges and a satisfying contrast between smoky sausage and sweet glaze.
It works especially well as a party appetizer, holiday snack, potluck dish, or easy weeknight addition to a larger meal.
What Is Candied Kielbasa?
Candied kielbasa is made by slowly cooking sliced kielbasa in a sweet glaze, typically featuring brown sugar and a combination of complementary ingredients such as ketchup, barbecue sauce, honey, mustard, or seasonings.
The kielbasa releases some of its savory juices as it cooks, which mingle with the sweet glaze and create a deeper, richer flavor. The final result should be tender, flavorful sausage pieces coated in a shiny, caramel-like sauce.
Ingredients
For approximately 6 servings, you’ll need:
- 1 pound kielbasa, sliced into bite-sized rounds
- ¾ cup packed brown sugar
- ½ cup ketchup
- ¼ cup barbecue sauce
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon yellow or Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- Optional: a pinch of red pepper flakes for a little heat
Choosing the Kielbasa
Smoked kielbasa is an excellent choice because it already has a naturally savory, smoky flavor that pairs beautifully with the sweet glaze. You can use pork kielbasa, turkey kielbasa, or another smoked sausage depending on your preference.
Try to cut the sausage into pieces of similar thickness. Uniform slices cook more evenly and make the finished dish easier to serve.
Step 1: Prepare the Kielbasa
Start by slicing the kielbasa into rounds approximately ½ inch thick.
If your kielbasa is particularly large, you can cut each round in half to create smaller appetizer-sized pieces. Pat the sausage lightly with a paper towel if it has excess moisture.
Set the sliced kielbasa aside while you prepare the glaze.
Step 2: Make the Sweet Glaze
In a medium bowl, combine the brown sugar, ketchup, barbecue sauce, honey, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and black pepper.
Whisk everything together until the brown sugar begins to dissolve and the mixture becomes smooth.
At this stage, the sauce should taste sweet, tangy, smoky, and slightly savory. If you enjoy spicy flavors, add a small pinch of red pepper flakes.
