Cheesy Beef Puff Pastry Twists
Few appetizers manage to be as simple, satisfying, and visually impressive as Cheesy Beef Puff Pastry Twists. These golden-brown twists combine flaky puff pastry, savory seasoned beef, and plenty of melted cheese in a fun finger-food format. They are perfect for parties, game nights, family gatherings, lunchboxes, or simply as a comforting snack when you want something warm and cheesy.
The best part is that they look much more complicated than they actually are. Once the beef filling is prepared, everything comes together quickly: layer the filling and cheese between sheets of puff pastry, cut into strips, twist, and bake until beautifully puffed and golden.
Why You’ll Love These Beef Puff Pastry Twists
There is a lot to appreciate about this recipe. The puff pastry becomes crisp and flaky on the outside while the beef mixture adds a rich, savory center. Melted cheese ties everything together and gives the twists that irresistible pull when they are freshly baked.
They are also wonderfully adaptable. You can make them mild or spicy, switch the type of cheese, add vegetables, or use different seasonings depending on what you have available.
Another advantage is that the twists can be prepared ahead of time and baked shortly before serving, making them particularly convenient when entertaining.
Ingredients
For approximately 18–24 twists, depending on the size:
For the Beef Filling
- 1 pound (450 g) ground beef
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ½ small onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ¼ teaspoon onion powder
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
For the Pastry
- 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed but still cold
- 1 to 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1 teaspoon sesame seeds or dried parsley, optional
Step 1: Prepare the Beef
Begin by heating the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add the diced onion and cook for about 2–3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it begins to soften. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds. Be careful not to let the garlic burn.
Add the ground beef to the skillet. Break it apart with a wooden spoon or spatula as it cooks.
Continue cooking until the beef is thoroughly browned and no longer pink.
Step 2: Season the Filling
Once the beef is cooked, drain excess grease if necessary.
Add the salt, black pepper, paprika, Italian seasoning, onion powder, tomato paste, and Worcestershire sauce.
Stir everything together and cook for another 1–2 minutes.
The tomato paste gives the beef a deeper flavor while the Worcestershire sauce adds a savory richness that works particularly well with the cheese.
Remove the skillet from the heat and allow the beef mixture to cool for several minutes.
Important: Don’t spread piping-hot beef onto the puff pastry. A cooler filling makes the pastry easier to handle and helps prevent the butter in the pastry from melting before it reaches the oven.
Step 3: Prepare the Puff Pastry
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
Line one or two baking sheets with parchment paper.
Place the first sheet of puff pastry on a lightly floured work surface. If necessary, gently roll it out to smooth the surface, but avoid making it too thin.
Spread the cooled beef mixture evenly over the pastry, leaving a small border around the edges.
Sprinkle the cheddar and mozzarella evenly over the beef.
The combination of cheddar and mozzarella works especially well: cheddar provides a stronger flavor while mozzarella melts beautifully.
