Hamburger Potato Casserole: A Cozy, Cheesy Family Dinner

When you need a dinner that is hearty, comforting, and easy enough for a busy weeknight, Hamburger Potato Casserole is a classic choice. Tender potatoes, seasoned ground beef, creamy sauce, and melted cheese come together in one bubbling casserole that feels like pure comfort food.

This dish is especially convenient because it uses simple ingredients that are easy to keep on hand. The potatoes make it filling, while the ground beef adds plenty of savory flavor. A generous layer of cheese on top brings everything together as it bakes into a golden, delicious finish.

Why You’ll Love This Hamburger Potato Casserole

There is something wonderfully satisfying about a casserole that turns everyday ingredients into a complete meal. This recipe is:

  • Easy to prepare with simple pantry and refrigerator staples
  • Hearty and filling, thanks to potatoes and ground beef
  • Creamy and cheesy without requiring complicated techniques
  • Family-friendly and easy to customize
  • Perfect for leftovers, since the flavors develop even more after sitting

For the best texture, slice the potatoes fairly thin and evenly. This helps them cook at the same rate and prevents some pieces from remaining firm while others become overly soft.

Ingredients

For about 6 servings, you’ll need:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 5–6 medium potatoes, peeled or scrubbed and thinly sliced
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil, if needed
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, optional

You can also substitute cream of chicken soup if you prefer a slightly different flavor.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes

Begin by washing and peeling the potatoes if desired. Slice them into thin, even rounds, approximately ⅛-inch thick.

Try to keep the slices similar in thickness. Very thick slices can take considerably longer to cook, while very thin slices may become overly soft.

Set the sliced potatoes aside while you prepare the beef mixture.

Step 2: Brown the Ground Beef

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Place a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon or spatula as it browns.

Once the beef is mostly cooked, add the diced onion and cook for another 3–4 minutes, until the onion begins to soften.

Add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, just until fragrant.

Drain excess grease if necessary.

Step 3: Season the Beef

Return the skillet to the heat and stir in the Worcestershire sauce, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.

Cook for another minute so the seasonings can blend into the beef.

The mixture should smell savory and aromatic before it goes into the casserole.
