Crockpot Pierogi and Kielbasa: A Cozy, Comforting Slow-Cooker Dinner
There are some meals that feel like a warm blanket at the end of a long day, and Crockpot Pierogi and Kielbasa is one of them. Tender potato-and-cheese pierogies, smoky kielbasa, creamy sauce, and savory seasonings come together in the slow cooker to create a hearty dinner with very little hands-on work.
This recipe is especially convenient on busy evenings because the slow cooker does most of the cooking. Ingredients
For approximately 6 servings, you’ll need:
- 1 (32-ounce) bag frozen potato-and-cheese pierogies
- 1 pound kielbasa, sliced into bite-sized rounds
- 1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1 cup sour cream
- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened and cut into small pieces
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, for serving
Optional Additions
For extra flavor, consider adding:
- Sautéed mushrooms
- Diced bell peppers
- Cooked and crumbled bacon
- A pinch of red pepper flakes
- Smoked paprika instead of regular paprika
- Extra shredded cheddar or mozzarella for the topping
Step-by-Step Method
Step 1: Prepare the Kielbasa
Slice the kielbasa into rounds approximately ¼-inch thick. Keeping the slices relatively even helps them warm consistently throughout the cooking process.
For an especially rich, smoky flavor, you can quickly brown the kielbasa in a skillet before adding it to the crockpot. This step isn’t essential, but the slight caramelization adds another layer of flavor.
Step 2: Prepare the Creamy Mixture
In a bowl, combine the chicken broth, sour cream, softened cream cheese, minced garlic, onion powder, paprika, black pepper, and salt.
Whisk until the mixture is reasonably smooth. Small pieces of cream cheese are fine because they will melt as the dish cooks.
The chicken broth helps loosen the sauce while the sour cream and cream cheese provide the creamy texture.
Step 3: Layer the Ingredients
Lightly grease the inside of your slow cooker.
Place about half of the frozen pierogies across the bottom. Add half of the sliced kielbasa and half of the sliced onion.
Sprinkle approximately half of the shredded cheddar over the first layer.
Repeat with the remaining pierogies, kielbasa, onion, and cheddar.
Finally, pour the creamy broth mixture evenly over everything.
Step 4: Add the Butter
Cut the butter into several small pieces and distribute them over the top.
As the dish cooks, the butter melts into the sauce and helps create a richer, more velvety consistency.
