Texas Toast Cheeseburger Melts
Few comfort foods hit the spot quite like a cheeseburger, but Texas Toast Cheeseburger Melts take the classic favorite and turn it into something extra crispy, cheesy, and satisfying. Instead of a traditional burger bun, seasoned Texas toast becomes the golden, buttery base and topping, while a savory beef filling and plenty of melted cheese create the perfect combination of textures.
These melts are especially delicious when the toast is crisp around the edges but still soft and buttery in the center. The seasoned ground beef brings classic burger flavor, while melted cheddar adds richness and helps hold everything together. Add caramelized onions, pickles, or a tangy burger sauce, and you have an easy dinner that feels like a restaurant-style comfort meal.

Ingredients
For about 4 hearty melts, you’ll need:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 8 slices frozen or refrigerated Texas toast
- 4–6 slices cheddar cheese, or about 1½ cups shredded cheddar
- ½ small onion, finely diced
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon butter, if needed for the pan
- Pickles, optional
- Shredded lettuce, optional
- Burger sauce or mayonnaise, optional
Step 1: Prepare the Beef Filling
Start by heating a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and break it apart with a wooden spoon or spatula.
Cook for several minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned and cooked through.
If there is a large amount of excess grease in the skillet, carefully drain some of it. Leave just enough fat to keep the beef flavorful and moist.
Step 2: Add the Onion and Seasonings
Add the diced onion to the skillet with the beef. Cook for about 3–4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onion begins to soften.
Sprinkle in the garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir well so the seasonings coat the beef evenly.
Next, add the ketchup, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. These ingredients give the filling that familiar savory, tangy flavor associated with a classic cheeseburger.
Cook everything together for another 1–2 minutes. The mixture should be flavorful and moist but not watery.
Remove the skillet from the heat.
Step 3: Prepare the Texas Toast
While the beef mixture is cooking, prepare the Texas toast according to the package directions if you’re using frozen toast.
For an extra-crispy melt, bake the toast just until it starts to become golden but isn’t completely browned. You want it sturdy enough to hold the filling while still having room to crisp further during the final cooking step.
If using homemade or refrigerated Texas toast, spread both sides lightly with softened butter and season with a little garlic powder.
