Cheesy Pierogi and Kielbasa Bake
If you love hearty comfort food that is easy to prepare and packed with savory flavor, this Cheesy Pierogi and Kielbasa Bake is a recipe worth adding to your dinner rotation. Tender potato-and-cheese pierogi are combined with smoky kielbasa, sweet onions, a creamy cheese sauce, and plenty of melted cheddar to create a satisfying casserole with crispy golden edges and a rich, comforting center.
This dish is especially convenient on busy evenings because it uses frozen pierogi and simple ingredients that require very little preparation. Instead of boiling the pierogi separately, everything comes together in one baking dish, making cleanup easier while allowing the flavors to blend beautifully in the oven.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
There is something wonderfully comforting about the combination of pierogi and kielbasa. The pierogi provide a soft, creamy potato filling, while the kielbasa adds a smoky, savory flavor and a slightly crisp texture around the edges.
The creamy sauce ties everything together, and the melted cheddar forms a golden, bubbly topping that makes the casserole especially inviting when it comes out of the oven.
It’s also easy to customize. You can add sautéed mushrooms, spinach, bell peppers, or even a little crushed red pepper if you prefer some heat.
Ingredients
For approximately 6 servings, you will need:
- 1 package (about 16 ounces) frozen potato-and-cheese pierogi
- 14 ounces kielbasa, sliced into thin rounds
- 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, for garnish
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Additional shredded cheddar cheese for the topping, if desired
Step 1: Prepare the Oven and Baking Dish
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Lightly grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with cooking spray, butter, or a small amount of olive oil. Set the dish aside while you prepare the filling.
If your pierogi are frozen, there is generally no need to thaw them first. Keeping them frozen helps them maintain their shape during baking.
Step 2: Brown the Kielbasa
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the olive oil.
Arrange the sliced kielbasa in the skillet in as even a layer as possible. Cook for approximately 3 to 5 minutes per side, or until the pieces develop a lightly browned, caramelized exterior.
The browning is important because it adds a deeper smoky flavor to the finished casserole.
Once browned, transfer the kielbasa to a plate and set it aside.
Step 3: Sauté the Onion and Garlic
Using the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and add the butter.
Add the sliced onion and cook for about 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it becomes soft and lightly golden.
Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 to 60 seconds. Be careful not to burn the garlic, as it can become bitter.
The onions will pick up some of the flavorful browned bits left behind by the kielbasa, making the casserole even more flavorful.
